Riot bans G2A sponsorship from World Championship

As many of you know G2A is a key reseller, which is a considered a gray market. Riot has removed G2A logo from the World Championships. Furthermore, Riot has told professional teams to do so as well and they have agreed to do so.

 

 

As reported by The Daily Dot, Riot banned G2A from sponsoring League of Legends professional teams, including Cloud9, Counter Logic Gaming and H2K, and removed the website's logo from merchandise available at the 2015 League of Legends World Championships.

 

This is because G2A has third party seller that were selling League of Legend accounts.

 

 

G2A came under fire because it contains a listing on its website that promotes services from a third party that sells League of Legends accounts, and because it offers "elo boosting services" - both of which contravene the game's terms of service and its eSports rulebook.

 

G2A has responded that it will drop all sponsorship to all professional teams

 

The ball now appears to be in G2A's court. We've asked the company for comment, but The Daily Dot reports G2A has told professional teams that it intends to drop sponsorship across the board following the ban.

 

Although Riot have told professional team to remove their G2A logos, they have not told streamers to do so, yet.

 

I personally have used G2A in the past to buy a game or two, but I do recognize that some of the sellers on the site are shady. What do you guys think, will this hurt G2A

Dam.. For RIOT to drop you as a sponsor is a pretty big deal, LoL is absolutely massive.

 

G2A has probably got to be sad, they will lose A LOT of publicity for this.

I was kind iffy on this decision until they said they sold League accounts...yeah they shouldn't be doing that...

 

That's like selling Steam accounts. Do they do that too? Or?

 

*Edit, just looked myself. They do sell Steam accounts that have a game attached. So...I wonder if Valve will ban G2A sponsors in Valve events then?

You guys do know a lot of those keys are legit right?  I know a few people that use the money they make from trading things on cs:go for steam games, then sell the games on there, or they sell their game-keys that they get with new hardware.

some of them yes.  but i can also torrent on piratebay completely legitly too.

grey markets should not be a sponsor for anybody that actually wants to be taken seriously.  and nobody should want a sponsor with a reputation like g2a

2013 world championship got 32 million viewers!!

 

2014 worlds got 27 million!

I think it's because in 2013 there was loads of hype around one of the players in the finals.

 

I think this year will be 30 million or so again, because of how well the North American teams are doing
