As someone with a WD Black Caviar, these noises seem to be normal. My HDD often sounds like a coffee grinder when I turn it on. They are very unsettling though.

The arm can tick, or sound mechanical, but if its clearly audible and you hear grinding like sand in a bearing then your drive might be starting to fail.

Blacks are pretty renown for being louder and hotter though, just something to keep in mind.

use CrystalDiskInfo to get the SMART status of the drive

it sounds the read write head is scratching the platter

is the drive mounted securely?

your platter is warped... oh wait that's for brake disks on a car. :P

it's probably fine for a WD black, if you are unsure make your room quiet and record a bit for us to hear.

My WD Black was loud at first, but now it seems to not make much noise anymore unless I install a huge program like GTAV.

I'm pretty sure that is normal. but wait other opinions too :)

Trying to remember what my friend's WD black sounded like... I think that was it. I do remember it being normal scratching noises that all HDD's have, just amplified lol (he's had his for 3 years now)

That sounds normal to me, is just like the WD disc my laptop had.

Those sounds are pretty normal, but if what you hear are some consistent clicks, then be careful.

use CrystalDiskInfo to get the SMART status of the drive

it sounds the read write head is scratching the platter

is the drive mounted securely?

It's impossible for the heads to be scratching the platter, the heads normally float above the platters and never touch them under normal working conditions.

OP says the drive is working fine, if the heads were indeed scratching the platters, his drive would have died long ago.

The stars died for you to be here today.

Hey there matto97,

I'm sorry for the weird noises from the drive. The drive should work relatively quiet but the general rule of thumb is that the more performance-oriented the drive, the more noise, vibrations and heat it will produce.
I would run WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic to check the drive's health. See if the drive passes both the quick and the extended tests. Here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=H9Ai68
You can also get the drive's S.M.A.R.T. status with the raw values and post them here so we can give you further info about drive's condition.
To reduce the noise you can try moving the drive around the case (if it's a desktop) and consider getting some rubber mounting kits that would reduce the vibrations. Do make sure all screws and cables are properly plugged and placed firmly all the way.

Hey sorry for the long reply delay, was at work.

The SMART thingy and the quick test have all ticks

And the hard drive is in the hard drive cage using rubber rail things, going to bed now so will do the longer test in the morning if you still want me to.

Do run the longer test as it would check the drive for bad sectors and post the results here. If possible, also post the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive. Also try moving the drive around a bit and see if that changes the noise levels (maybe it's resonating with the case or something else).

According to the S.M.A.R.T. your drive should be healthy. Do make the extended test. It does take quite a while (the larger the capacity the longer it'll take) and post the results. :)
