3rd Party Router with AT&T 3600HGV?

sterlingr

Hello all,

I currently have the AT&T 3600HGV modem/router for my Uverse internet. Unfortunately, this router does not support n or ac wireless and I don't believe it even supports gigabit ethernet. To solve this I want to add a third party router (Asus RT-N56U?) behind that modem.

After looking around at multiple sites, I have learned I need to put my AT&T router/modem into "DMZ" mode, then plug it into the input of my Asus router. Other than that... I'm lost.

Can somebody explain, In detail what I need to do to set this up flawlessly?

Thank you all so much, I apologize for my lack of knowledge.

DO NOT GET THE N56U its absolute trash. get the 66u

i orginally bought the n56u and after a software update it instantly bricked itself, so i returned it and got a replacement didnt install the update. once i got it up and running the signal was complete ass, i then again replaced and again the signal was worse then the router my isp gave me. so i returned it AGAIN and got the 66u and it was godlike. also keep in mind that you need a separate modem.

So, I use do Tech Support for Uverse. The 3600HGV is crap. You should see if they can get you an NVG589 which allows for more advanced settings and is easier to configure for this setup. You might have to fight with them a bit because they won't switch out Gateways just because or at least they didn't when I worked there last year. If all else fails, threaten to cancel and ask for retentions and they'll probably give you whatever you want if your close to the end of your contract date or past it. The big reason to get the NVG589 is if you upgrade past 24mbps down.

Technically the 3600 doesn't support what you're asking. Now there is a way to kind of fake it so that it works essentially in bridge mode but there's no guarantee and depending what your trying to do it may not work for you. It's also extremely complicated. Check this out here: https://forums.att.com/t5/U-verse-2014-Archive/3600HGV-bridge-mode-Necessary-to-change-FW-DMZ-setting-for-all/td-p/3526079

Also, any time you have an issue with the service. If you call in the first thing they have you do is unplug your third party router as they do not support them and they trouble shoot their gateway only. This is includes a factory reset which will undo all that you have done settings wise. Once their verify their services works they'll offer a paid tech support option for the router but those guys are all in India and the Philippines and know nothing.

Edit: Just confirmed with a buddy who still works there that they also offer the NVG599 now in some areas and only if you have gigapower and it supports AC wireless.

Thanks for the information, the real problem with all this is that I've had my 3600HGV since before customers had to rent their equipment, so I own it. Any time I mention changing routers to them, they are going to force me to sign up for rental.... not what I want to do.

So it looks like my options are to upgrade past 24mbps, and try and argue with them to give me the router for free OR try and talk them into sending me a new router/modem for free anyways.... great.

What are the chances that if I call (Or chat) them, say I want the NVG589 without renting, that I will get what I want??

Thanks so much for your insight.

Not how AT&T Uverse works, you must use one of their modems (Which are also routers). Therefore if you want to use your own router, you have to manually turn off the "Router" portion of your Att modem/router. Dumb eh?

It's possible if you talk with Retentions and threaten to cancel they may be able to work something you. It's not easy because of course they'd rather charge you a monthly fee for it but there are a lot who own them.

Also, any time you deal with them, Call them. The people who do the chatting are usually over seas and don't really listen.

Just add an Access point... Not a router... I said this already.

I need a new router, because I need the 3rd party product to do the routing... If I just add an access point the network speeds will be the same because it is still having to go though the 3600HGV for routing. In other words, adding an access point might give me the "n" wireless speeds... but without a router that supports such speeds (and gigabit ethernet) it will make no difference.
