Building a PfSense box

Samppa221

So i was going to buy a load balancing router and the only one i could afford was only rated for 100mbps so i decided to do a pfsense box to do the load balancing...

So for the pc i got a dell optiplex 790 with an i3 and 2gb of ram and 160gb hdd and a 1gbps nic. So i would need 2 more nics to get 2 wan ports and 1 lan port so wich one would be better from these cheap 1gbps cards: D-link DGE-528T or a TP-link TG 3269( http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/cat-11_TG-3269.html)

They  both seem to support linux so i suppose they work with pfsense.

those would probably not work with pfsense. You can get intel dual dort cards from amazon for about 50 bucks

My native language is C++

pfSense it's running based on FreeBSD 10.1 for current version which also means whatever hardware driver FreeBSD 10.1 support it's being ported over to pfSense.

check here for the Hardware list:-

https://www.freebsd.org/releases/10.1R/hardware.html

And do a hardware "chipset" search on that page, e.g. "Intel i82586" for one type of the NIC.

Here is my box hardware list:-

Intel Xeon E3-1225 V2 @ 3.20GhzIntel S1200KPR server board mini-ITXA-data ECC 4GB x 2 1600MHzIntel Ethernet Server Adapter I350-T2

This box has been running for few years now with zero issue with latest version of pfSense.
