i did mean from an Nvidia standpoint, does it stand for anything?

 

It's just a more powerful card with a name made to gimmick.

for nVidia GPUs it means better than the one of the same namesake (I suspect it's more complex than that, but that's all you really need to know)

Aftermarket 980Ti >= Fury X >= Reference 980Ti > Fury > 980 > 390X > 390 >= 970 > 380X > 380 >= 960 > 950 >= 370 > 750Ti = 360

Wow, they've been doing this with the naming since at least the Geforce 2 and I never bothered to find out what it stood for...

Except it's not like they were squeezing them in... They plan entire lines with several Ti's in them well ahead of time

They do plan it ahead of time, but it's still a result of them not having enough model numbers to fit their plans, ignoring the fact that they haven't renewed any of their low end SKUs in a while, so those names are technically open. But a sudden shift in what numbers stand for what performance tier would be confusing as well.

 

When they really do need to squeeze in an unplanned SKU it shows painfully, as we saw with the "GTX 650 Ti BOOST Edition" or the good old "GTX 560 Ti with 448 cores" (official name). What was great was that EVGA released a "GTX 560 Ti with 448 Cores Classified Ultra Edition" which was just the best name ever :D
