wasn't there someone implementing this into a phone case a while back? What happened to that project? Was it a failure because its so little power that it is basically useless?

it used a "feedback loop" but was badly flawed. It harvested the signals FROM YOUR PHONE and charged from that. Basically just wasting power (inefficient returns) and crippling connectivity.

The amount of power you can get from RF is almost zero, hell, you would need to be real close to the RF source or you don't get much.

 

But imagine them making a power supply that emits bands that aren't used, say .5-1.9Ghz and 3.0-4.5 Ghz... and everything else would be powered  wireless. The implications would be vast! 

You don't really want random devices spewing RF anywhere.

If RF signals were dangerous to humans, we'd have seen massive evidence of it by now - especially so, since we've been saturating the air with them for the last 20+ years.

 

All governments limit the power of RF anyway. We would have to multiply the power by hundreds or thousands of magnitudes before it could start to be dangerous to humans.

There are so many RF signals "spewing" everywhere anyways. Apartment buildings, offices, schools, radio broadcast stations... it's inevitable. Might as well utilize it for something useful.

Although, high amounts of RF energy do give you RF sickness, which I've personally had on a few occasions at mountain top cell sites where installs are typically rushed and done very poorly, so there is a lot of RF leaking out of wave guides. You just feel light headed and get an upset stomach for a bit, til you move away for about 5 minutes. The typical person will never encounter that much radiation tho, hell most people who work on cell towers won't even.

 

The maximum safe exposure for a normal cellular antenna is being directly in front of it for about three minutes. IIRC, being a foot in front of it was ~15 minutes, and 10 feet in front of it was an hour. That is the "safe" limit, effectively it would never be able to harm you, they just apply a huge buffer.

 

FM radio towers, on the other hand, are extremely dangerous when you are on them. They can actually start cooking a person if not turned down while being maintained. They put out magnitudes higher power amounts and the human bodies are the perfect antennas due to the wavelength size.

Is it not the little bit that counts though? shouldn't we utilize energy as much as possible instead of so easily dismissing new methods and improving on it's efficiency? I don't know about you, but I can't dismiss an entire method of harnessing energy by sayin, "You can't get much energy out of it though."
