DVI connections with an HDMI cable run

mannyace

Hi all,

I'm a long time Youtube subsciber and I finally figured I'd register. I have a question that I'd normally test myself but this gives me a reason to join up, and I can't test anything for a few days since I'm waiting on shipping.

My question is can I use a DVI to HDMI adapter, an HDMI cable, and then an HDMI to DVI adapter to connect my computer to a display?

It's more complex than I'd like to describe but the reason is that I already have really long ~50 foot HDMI cables from monoprice and probably already have the adapters I'd need. I'd rather do this than buy a long DVI cable. I am waiting on monitors to be shipped to me and I still have to pick a video card. It's for my third and fourth monitors, the resolution of each is only 1440 by 990, DVI single link will work fine and I'll pay attention to the DVI type, video card drivers, etc.

So just generally speaking, can I jump from DVI to HDMI and then back to DVI again? Anyone done anything like this?

Thanks,

Manny

Welcome to the Forums!

Yes you can do that, while there are extra long DVI cables out there if you have a long HDMI in place already a set of adapters will do the job:

Well it's a simpler problem than you think. Adapters don't do any kind of processing with the signal, they just rearrange the pins into a different shape so you'll be able to physically plug it in to your other device with the different connector. Although, of course this only works with standards that are electrically compatible like DVI with HDMI, some combinations like changing HDMI into DisplayPort will require a signal converter. But in this case you're just moving the pins around into a DVI shape and then back into an HDMI shape, since the computer doesn't have eyes and doesn't care about the shape, just the electrical signal, the computer will have absolutely no idea anything funny is going on, it will be exactly like a straight HDMI-HDMI connection :)

A follow up question for you kind folks:

Can I do the same thing but with a DisplayPort connector? So that would be DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, an HDMI cable, and then finally an HDMI to DVI adapter.

Thanks,
Manny

That should be possible but keep in mind it will not work in the opposite direction (DVI/HDMI computer to DisplayPort display).

I guess I'll buy a DP adapter and test it to see if it works. This is all because I'm now in search of a quad monitor GPU and I fear I'll finally run into a DP connector and have to use it. Thanks folks.

In case someone else runs into this later, it does appear to work.

I used a DP to HDMI adapter, a 3 foot HDMI cable, and a DVI adapter plugged into 1440x900 monitor and it worked. I suspect it would work just fine with a longer HDMI cable and a bigger monitor but that isn't something I can test right now.
