Operation Eden was created to replace BEx, make sure the organisation was ready for the Baby Persistent Universe and have weekly meet ups, Military training and scouting was originally the first to be created but due to an overwhelming response from the community other trades wanted to be ready and have been separated into Projects.

original post

OK,
So with the baby PU round the corner (crossed fingers) I wanted to work on training and prepping how the organisation will work in the full universe, a lot is up for debate but @ixi_your_face has a rough idea of how the military will work in game.

Military units will be like this :
4 small ships to a squad (Aurora, Scythe, Hornet etc)
Each squad follows a squad leader
Platoon commander is something like an Idris and controls 4 squad leaders

Commander is an escort ship, he controls 4 Idris'

Makes sense so the idea is that in the Baby PU we can at least test the Squads and Squad Leaders. The mission is to scout out the entire Universe find every nook and cranny and find a Base of Operations, this should at least give us an idea of how it'll work in game
.

This mission is for the community so feel free to suggest other goals!

High Council
We know how these people are.

Military Council
The Politics of the Military, These are the people that the ranks below but have cannot pull rank, unless they are respected military heroes and aces of course

-REDACTED-
Commander
More will be said when the time comes

Platoon Commander
More Will be said when the time comes

Fleet Instructor
These are people that have not only proved themselves but improved the skills of others around them, they are squadron leaders with the addition that they can instruct multiple squadrons (up to four or 3 plus their own) in hope of making the entire unit fly better together, they however do not get the comfort of a Platoon Commander and will usually fly a single or two seater ship. This position is a highly distinguished position given to service mean and women that deserve our respect.

Squadron Leader
Speciality Squadron Leader (SSL) (eg. Hornet Squadron Leader, Avenger Squadron Leader)
Wingmen and Wing Commanders that have been recognised by the upper ranks get there own approved Squadron and become a Squadron Leader, it is up to them who they choose to join their squadron whether by recruitment or application

Speciality SL have there own squadron but are known for flying a specific ship. When they are not flying that particular ship and join another squadron they temporary release command to a SSL that is and take up there secondary position (for example an Avenger SL is flying a Constellation for an escort mission and joins a Hornet Squadron Leader, The Avenger SL releases command and takes the position of Wing Commander)

Wing Commander and Wingmen
Wing Commanders pull rank above Wingmen and have but have no authority unless their Squadron Leader is lost or relinquish it to them temporarily, a Squadron should contain 1-2.
Wingmen are the people that fly by the side of the Wing Commanders

Project Eden will supersede BEx when the Baby PU is release. BEx "failed" in the sense that less people wanted a tournament and just wanted to meet up and have some fun, something Eden will hopefully provide (I will update with dates in the future)

In addition due to distinguished service in the fleet, the High Council and I would like to offer these positions to the following people:

@Corwin111 - For distinguished flying in the BEx tournament we would like to offer you the position of Squadron Leader and Fleet Instructor
@Napper198 - For distinguished flying in the BEx tournament in the Hornet we would like to offer you the position of Wing Commander and Hornet Squadron Leader
@Adreyu - For distinguished flying in the BEx tournament in the Avenger we would like to offer you the position of Wing Commander and Avenger Squadron Leader.
@CommanderFett - For distinguished flying in the BEx tournament in the Cutlass and recommendation from fellow Officers we would like to offer the position of Wing Commander, Cutlass Squadron Leader

Corwin, Napper and Adreyu
Each of you will be allowed your own Squadron.
Fett
You get the first Mercenary Squadron, provided you will help work out any kinks ;)

CitizenCon is this Saturday, right? So stoked for that! :D

Though I love the initiative, this is only for the military right now, right?

To be known with every nook and cranny, our exploration division also needs a kickstart, but to do it without a (baby) PU, I'm not sure. :)

New to Star Citizen? Look no further!

Exploratory, Salvaging and Scouting but we'll need to get the military sorted first.

But speculate to accumulate :)

I'd be surprised if this Vanduul attack today isn't related, I'm looking into Pitchfork when I have spare time to see if we can get the salvage teams out to sweep up but found nothing as of yet.

As I said this is for the community, if you want to work on that side I'll add it to the original post.

Firstly, love the idea of getting started and prepping early :)

Dont know if you guys have seen this, maybe you have

The pilots in this video are effectively running a 4 man squad (much like the one you are proposing rentaspoon) but are using a buddy system to target enemies. You can listen to their lingo and how they communicate among buddies, which is really important to good logistics. From what i can see, there are two people per buddy team, and then that means two buddy teams per squad (though i would suggest they are rather a fireteam than a squad).
Maybe this can be considered to be implemented? What do you all think?

Higher than Wing commander lower than fleet instructor, but I do need to explain all of it later.

I'll put a chain of command up on my lunch break, as for accepting you can send a PM to ixi but accepting here will suffice.

Edit: as for what you do right now, think of a squad name, squad handle, who you want in your squad or if you want people just to apply/join in as is and a pretty squad emblem if you want.

Size of squad is up for grabs at the moment but try to keep it to 4 + yourself

Good point, how the squad is run is down to the Leader, the idea being.

A) we'll end up with specialist teams

2) we'll find out what works

D) this allows player freedom

I am honored and I will be happy to help.

I have been working on some tactics and flight training schemes already but I keep holding off from presenting anything concrete, because the flight models keep changing and the game has been painfully unstable lately. Hopefully the mini PU will give us a bit more wiggle room to play around with tactics.

That said, speaking from my previous cat herding experience from various guilds in games, including about a year's worth of fleet command in EVE online, I'd say the biggest challenge would be to get more of our community to participate on a regular basis. :) Dividing a combat force into set platoons, squads and fire teams is nigh perfect in an environment where more than half your personnel are not likely to be AWOL at any given time, watching Game of Thrones with the GF. ;) The structure is just fine, but we may have to be pretty flexible about the actual member composition of each squad during operations.

@rentaspoon I of course accept your offer and I'm honored to be part of the military  :)

Congrats to @Corwin111 and @Adreyu from me as well. Let us crush what stand between us and profit.

As for the structure, I think squads are supposed to be 4 leader included, but we'll have to wait to see how CIG is going to implement command structure anyway (if any).

Plus I'd suggest we incorporate larger ships as well. something like squad with small ships (i.e. Hornet) each with its own leader. Wings with medium ships (i.e. Retaliator) which leader also controls squads. Platoons are then one Idris controlling multiple wings and as soon as we can afford one the fleet leader will sit in a Bengal, Javelin or Retribution. Also sizing should adjust to available resources (people online and their ships) and task (attacking a fleet, capital ship, station).

Did you know this forum has an unofficial/official Star Citizen group? Head over to our organization's page, numerous forum threads or our LTTC Discord Server to find out more.

Or would we have a separate bomber squadron that would pair up a bomber with a particular squad for larger attacks? Say, 4 hornets (or equivalent) and a retaliator (or equivalent). Think like the scene from Avatar, where Papa Dragon in the big fucker with the huge bomber behind it being escorted by the small Reavers. I'm sorry, I'm getting giddy about this just thinking about it.

Squad sizes vary but in the army its 12 plus squad leader

Squadrons in aviations are usually 12 - 24 with 3 to 4 flights comprimising 3 - 6 planes (flights are what we are calling squads).

so it can vary.

BUT thats the idea of Project Eden, test all this so we won't have to when the alpha comes out.

They would group up with other squadrons but wouldn't have to be limited to bombers only.

Post on the way hopefully explaining the choices

congrats napper :)

also like this idea. I am good in Avenger but if i found out I'm also proficient with my constellation id like to be able to lead with that. That would also make the rapid exploration needed in the baby PU much more viable.

Edit: also I think squadrons should be 5 as thats the size of teams in AC anyway.

updated with the chain of command and @CommanderFett I suggest you reread it

Edit: @rucdoc could you give me a hand for abbreviating squadron call signs, I have a feeling you would be good at it.

I'll see what I can do

Cheers

I realise I have to catch up on some needed flight training, but I will put my 325a (maybe-soon-to-be Gladius) to good use and see where I end up :)

I'm discussing with the SL about running sizes and possible regiments instead.

The idea is to keep it all flexible, allowing players freedom to create their own squadrons but they wont be Approved, meaning no benefits no ranking up.

Squadron Leaders will promote/demote wingmen/wing commanders so it benefits being in a Approved Squadron.

Good Wing commanders will end up with there own Squadron or take over current ones. Basically the brass above promote the brass below but you can also be denied a promoted.

Once we've got this fleshed out, we'll get this approved and hopefully have a working military.
