napstar

I have my desktop of MSI x99s gaming 7 with MSI gtx 960 gpu and core i7 5820k ..
I want to mild overclock my machine..

Whats the best cooling solution for the CPU.. Is it water cooler or air cooler..

I liked cooler master v8 gts very much for its fancy look..
should I go for this ..
Thank you

I would buy a 212 evo, its cheap and preforms amazingly and save up for a 970 or 980

I have a h100I on my 5820k overclocked to 4.2 ghz with vcore at 1.2v I could push for more as the max load temp is only 68-69 celcius.

I'd suggest going air cooling as that is a very expensive setup that will perform great for many years to come and you want a cooling solution that is reliable and will easily last the entire life of the cpu. That being said I'd highly recommend going with the Dark Rock pro3 or the Noctua nh-d14 or nh-d15. Both of these coolers can in the right setting outperform AIO water coolers like the Corsair H100i.

i would ditch the I7 5820k and 960 if your a gamer for a 4790k and a 980 ti imo but for watercooling i would go for the ek predator 240 for a mild overclock

For mild overclocking a decent air cooler will be fine. When you want to do 4.5GHz and up, I would recommend a good AIO.

There's no best solution, as every method has its drawbacks. A couple of good coolers are the Corsair H100i/GTX, H110i/GT/GTX, NZXT Kraken X61, bequiet! Dark Rock Pro 3, Noctua NH-D15 (one of the best air coolers available). With the air coolers, make sure there's enough space to fit your RAM, as well as adequate space to close the side panel. Likewise with the water coolers, make sure you have a location to mount the radiators.

I have an i7 5820k

Used swiftech h240x. Corsair h105, corsair h110i gt, the aio are loud. Replaced fans with noctua fans, calmed them down but still heard the pumps. I bought a nh d15s single fan, and it's amazing. Temps within 4 degrees F with aio. 4.5 at 1.35 v my chip is 80F at hottest core. Aios were around 76F. I have a 760t, closed top vents, board runs cooler and cpu stable.I've ran Aios for years but will never go back, and won't spend stupid monies on custom watercooling. Just make sure heatsink fits. They have a compatibility list for a bunch of boards........

.fyi I get 4.5 stable at 1.2v, but wanted to test the heatsinks so I upped it to 1.35 for excessive heat

280 aios with comparable fans to high end air coolers are nearly always "better" but for similar fan configurations are louder (as the fans are closer to the edge of the case, plus pump noise) assuming the extra headroom doesn't allow you to turn down the fans. Which it should.

240 aios tend to be on par or slightly worse than the best air coolers but can be either cheaper or much more. (Example of cheaper is the lepa auqachanger 240, while the ek predator 240 is one of the most expensive options.)

Less than 240 mm aios are always a worse value for your money than air coolers, but all aios have a oft forgotten benefit (and people running only cpu stresses won't see it) that is exhausting hot air directly out of the case. This massively improves case temps under combined (or even gpu primary) loads leading to better thermals across the board.

Furthermore aio's like the x61 from nzxt offer 5 year warranty on the cooler, so you don't have to worry about that longevity.

There is a place for both air and water cooling systems. Ironically the more space constrained or gpu intensive a build becomes the more it makes sense to use an aio regardless of its cpu only performance compared to a high end air cooler.
