r9. More VRAM, no VRAM-Gate and actually it performs better.

R9 390, its fairly neck and neck if not better in games and has an extra 4GB of vRam to boot.

the GTX970 vram issue isnt an issue.

if you're to the point those last 512mb matter, you should go for a higher vram card anyways.

as for the difference between 970 and 390:

- 390 has twice the vram, and is slightly faster in most games.

- 970 has less vram, is a tiny bit slower, but is MUCH more energy efficien -> less heat into your room.

some people also pick nvidia specificly for some driver features.

I personally would go with a 390, but you'll probably be happy either way.

the GTX970 vram issue isnt an issue.

It is on SLI 970s a somewhat popular set up. But point well taken.

Also we're seeing this questions like 5 times per day, I think people have been so used to praising Nvidia they can't believe people are now recommending an AMD card over an Nvidia card over almost all tiers but the very top of the line.

390 is better, but if you are like me you might use something like, Blender, for example, which only supports CUDA, so just make sure of stuff like that.

Join the Appleitionist cause! See spoiler below for answers to common questions that shouldn't be common!

Spoiler

Q: Do I have a virus?!
A: If you didn't click a sketchy email, haven't left your computer physically open to attack, haven't downloaded anything sketchy/free, know that your software hasn't been exploited in a new hack, then the answer is: probably not.

Q: What email/VPN should I use?
A: Proton mail and VPN are the best for email and VPNs respectively. (They're free in a good way)

Q: How can I stay anonymous on the (deep/dark) webzz???....

A: By learning how to de-anonymize everyone else; if you can do that, then you know what to do for yourself.

Q: What Linux distro is best for x y z?

A: Lubuntu for things with little processing power, Ubuntu for normal PCs, and if you need to do anything else then it's best if you do the research yourself.

Q: Why is my Linux giving me x y z error?

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

i'm kinda of the idea SLI is only a thing when there's no better single gpu option.

and i'm seeing rather the oposite actually, people have shouted and screamed at me for seeing the nvidia driver features as a feature, as well as the usual "heat doesnt matter"

i agree that its terrible wording, but its more so a "yes, the 512MB is slower, but no, it doesnt matter unless you're playing VRAM hog games, where you should go for a 6-8GB card either way"

i was just joking

but yes, for games like the Auto that is being Thefted Grandly, the VRAM can be a limiter for 8xMSAA

For most other cards, however dual 970s or specially, dual 390/x/s actually are a better choice for 4k rigs than a single Fury X or single 980ti since they can drive superior performance  to those for only like 150 extra bucks.

390 over the 970 yes. The 980 is a different beast though.

the 390 performs better in most games, but if you want the 970, get an evga model. some of them overclock really well.

the 970 model above uses around 201w without an overclock. it's probably just as fast as some of the r9 390's. who knows. i bet it can overclock very well though. it's also on sale at a great price.

It can be quite bad if you have a case with poor airflow. But as long as you have good airflow in your case, it'll be fine. Now whether or not it outputs more heat into your room, I can't say for sure... Since changing to a 390x from a 280x. I haven't notice a temp increase in my room since day one.

Well, it's no longer just a VRam issue, but also that the 390 beats the 970 in DX11 (non-gameworks games), and bests the 980 in DX12 (thus far).

get the 390X then... saves you quite a bit of money and the performance is almost identical.

with DX12, the 390X seems to be pulling ahead.
