Bike Not Shifiting

So I just got a used bike, but it does not shift gears? does any of you know how to fix it? it has 5 sprokets in the back but in the shifter I only feel three clicks which don't seem to do anything! (it's a roadmaster just so you know)

If you know your way around bikes it's just a matter or adjusting the shifter to get it to align and shift on every click and possibly the length of the cable.

WD-40 is not a lubricant it's a water displacer. WD-40 stands for Water Displacement, 40th formula.

It's not viscous like a lubricant is though, it loses it's effectiveness quite quickly. That statement can be taken so many ways.........and now I'm just derailing the thread at this point. Which is likely the issue; the derailleur.

You could be maxing out on the cable, pinched cable, improperly adjusted rear derailed. As long as everything spins you don't need lubricant. Also wd-40 is the worst thing to put on a bike. Never use wd-40 unless your trying to free a rusted out door hinge so you can replace it. You'd be better off taking it to your local bike shop. Though if it's a Walmart bike they probably won't have parts and then you are sol.

I'm not a bike mechanic, let me just get that out of the way first. I would also recommend heading over to Bike Forums (search in google), there is a HUGE community of bike nuts there, and they can help you get this sorted out better than you can here.

 

If you don't want to go there, I recommend this book:

Out of the 3 books that I've gone through, it's probably the easiest to read and understand for bike repair and maintenance.

 

 

Without actually seeing the bike and going over it you could also be dealing with:

 

Rust in the cables that can cause it to bind and not shift properly. 

 

Broken shifter

 

Bent derailleur, may not look bent to you, but it can be bent out of spec.

 

 

Don't use WD-40. Try something like Tri Flow, it's an excellent all around lubricant for your bike. I won't go into the various lubes you can and should use on your chain depending on where you ride and what you're riding in (mud, rain, snow, sand).

Replace the inner and outer cables, and the watch all the GCN/GMBN videos on how to correctly tune a derailleur.
