The Seasonic G is a much better power supply than the Seasonic S/M12II-B 520w.

 

As for your question, a power supply job is to take AC power from the wall and turn it into usable DC power for your computer; however, this process isn't 100% efficient and will have some of that energy lost and wasted as heat. The benefits by going for a Gold efficiency unit will result in lower electricity bill (often negligible depending on application and rates), as well as a cooler power supply and possibly a more quite operation (fan doesn't require to spin as hard).
