I've done it but I think Grease would be better

Generally you should use greases for that, but you can. It won't be harmful. Just make sure to wipe off the excess before you ride.

You can but that stuff doesn't last and evaporates overtime, something like a silicone based lube or light grease works well.

I did... but you shouldn't really.

It would remove some of the grease and then eventually evaporate. Then it would be even worse. Might as well use grease the first time.

Something graphite or silicon based would probably be good.

nope. I just have to do it more often (it evaporates), and wipe up the extra (its liquid)

Some are usually they are a little thicker and aren't runny like water which is idea for chains, others like the pressured spray canned ones are fairly runny though.

WD40 will be fine to free up the links but because of the low viscosity it won't lubricate for long periods of time. At the end of the day it is a penetrating fluid, not a lubricant.

Too heavy will gunk up your chain use something synthetic based line like silicon

My brother tried something similar actually, because of the salt contained in the cooking oil he bought it rusted the chain lol

Do NOT use WD40 for you bike chain. That's not what it's designed for. It's a penetrating oil, and won't stick on the chain long enough. You'll end up wearing out your chain, cassette, and chain rings. You'll also have a much higher chance of losing the parts to rust.

Seriously dude why don't you just get proper chain lube? Chain lube is cheaper than WD40.
