G3258 Enough For an HTPC?

i'm going to build an htpc. is the g3258 sufficient or should i get an i3-4170? i would just be using it to surf the web, stream video content, and use netflix. no video games.

thanks broz

I've built a HTPC with a G3258, and the only issue I had came down to intel graphics drivers not playing well with live TV signal on Windows Media Center, but everything else was great.

10 out of 10, would do again.

Even a Celeron can handle that.

It should be fine buddy.

An apu would be a nice choice too for a HTPC

which apu would you recommend?

probably not enough for 4K, but its fine for 1080p.

would an i3-4170 be enough for 4k?

i would roll with an APU. they have onboard video decoders, and a few other nifty features.

A8 7600k or A10 7850k are great for these kind of things.

Sure it will cost a little bit more then the intel setup, but in turn, you CAN game on these, if you ever want to.

2k or 4k content, especially if you are playing back videos locally, does require a little grunt, of which the G3258 may in some rare cases struggle with (it shouldnt)

This tiny little mini-ITX setup will run any content just fine.

For casual gaming you would have to get a 7850k

EDIT: I own that mobo myself. OC wise, the bios is shit.

but the wifi is pretty stable. If you are looking to upgrade, the card that is installed by default with the mobo is the little brother of this:

https://www.komplett.no/product/833397/datautstyr/nettverksprodukter/nettverkskort/intel-dual-band-wireless-ac-7260

If you want to mod your PC to have a remote (there is two versions of this little card) then you can use this

https://www.komplett.no/product/832832/datautstyr/kabinetterbarebone/tilbehr/streacom-flirc-se-adaptive-ir-receiver

Just search for that on Amazon.

Version 1 can use ANY remote that you pair with the chip

Version 2 uses a remote that you have to buy.

You will have to drill a little hole in the case to mount the reciever's eye.

Np, was just wondering if you were going to "dip your toes" into the "APU game", seeing as you seem to be a die-hard intel fan

You need dual xeons for this. Streaming needs like 20 cores minimum to achieve 1 fps

Jokes aside, why not just the intel celeron?

Also, low wattage amd apus works like a charm too.

[Edit]

Go for price perfomance apus at pentium or less price point rather than a cheap A2 or smt as itll be shitty.

You know.. if only god damn intel had i3 broadwell.. we can have a10 gpu performance and i3 cpu performance.. thats a dream.. why intel... WHY

“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

A10 7870k @ 4.6Ghz is within 5% of a i3 4160/4360 in single core and like 25% faster in multi core... i know, cuz i own one.

The iGPU is a beast and if you get it to 1050MHz it will creep close to a i5 broadwell (it will go from being 20% weaker to being 7-10% weaker)

I couldn't tell any difference between my G3258 at stock 3.2 GHz vs my Xeon E3-1231v3 in any of those applications, and it was more than enough for emulation too. I think it would make a really nice HTPC CPU, especially since you can give it a mild overclock in a couple of years if it starts getting a little too slow. No reason to spend $40 more on an i3.
