GTX 970 vs R9 390

Subduck
Go to solution Solved by Sammael,

This is the most confusing topic i have ever started...

It's actually not so bad.  The people telling you to get the 970 are advising you to buy a slower card for the same money, that already does worse on average than a 390 today in dx11, and with a gap that will almost certainly widen with more dx12 titles.

The reason they do this is because they love nvidia, and want to see them dominate the sales charts.  In the end, they don't care if nvidia releases a slower card, they just want their own brand loyalty validated and reinforced by others choosing the inferior part like they did.  Actually, that goes too far, if they got a 970 when it launched it made more sense, if they got one after the 390 was released, the tweaked Hawaii part, they chose the slower horse and are desperately seeking validation through the purchases of others.  It's quite transparent.  Do not follow them into the abyss of inferior performance, they will lead you down the path of darkness and slower framerates and lower minimum frames in gpu ram heavy games and dx12 titles.

I am still trying to decide on a graphics card. I play at 1080p and i'm hoping to max out most games. I see the 970 and 390 trade blows in a lot of games plus they are around the same price point. I am veering towards the 390 but then i will not have all the software like Shadowplay or Geforce Experience. Some opinions would be really appreciated :)

Do you actually plan on using those programs?

amd has a better price to performance ratio with the sacrifice of more heat and less power efficiency, in the end it's a matter of what games you play (i don't know which games amd does better better at or nvidia is better at but still)

If you really want to use nvidia feature then get the 970 but the 390 performs better so if you only have a slight interest in the features get the 390

A 390 is simply an overclocked 290. A 970 is 12% faster than a 290 @ 1080p. Overclock the 970 from 12xx BC to 1550bc and the gap widens between the 390 and 970. Get the 970 for 1080P.

BTW.. Where does the 390 perform better than the 970?

R9 390. Especially if you ever get the erge to wanna play games at higher resolutions and some 1080p games like Shadow of Mordor w/ HD Texture Pacls go nesr or,past 4GBs of VRAM. Also AMD has Raptr for streaming games. And there are other programs out there like my personal favorite, OBS.

Are really even going to utilize those programs?

I dunno whether Geforce experience is good some people have complained about it but I dunno

Shadowplay isn't a big deal when you have OBS which I would definitely use over Shadowplay anyways.

I would get the 390 since they're basically same and there aren't really any positives to a 970 really power consumption is only 50W less and like I said OBS is always there but dunno about Geforce

You can also overclock a 390. Forgot that part huh? 390 still trades blows. Especially in games thst utilize more then 3.5-4Gbs of VRAM.

I have tried shadowplay. OBS is better.

Also, every MHZ does more on a AMD card. Kindda like how every GHZ on intel does better then AMD.

Welp - a friend showed me how "great" it is - the video he sent me was full of artifacts and sound glitches. Just use OBS or anything made by people who know WHAT they're trying to do.

Come on dude. 970 OC'd on air is going to trounce the 390. My 970's all did 158x BC and 8000 effective memory. If he was going 1600P or 4K i would push the 390 but for 1080P the 970 is king

in today's games the 390 is a bit quicker. You can expect that gap to get bigger with the wave of DX12/Vulkan games in 2016.

Lots of bandwidth and VRAM is always nice to have too in terms of being ready for the future.

You gonna need a better PSU though preferably 650w with that CPU.

Holy fanboy batman. The two trade blows and overclocking only matters if you do it. In GTA the 970 is more stable while the 390 hits higher fps spikes. Since the OP is on a 1080p set and the chances are they're at 60hz anything over 60fps is pointless. So ether card with do the job. Get the one you want to look at behind the glass of your case at that point

If anyone asks you never saw me.
