Do i need a GPU for this project? Or would Onboard work fine?

trainergames

Ok i am working on a media/data server out of parts i got in a craigslist trade. What i would like to with it is other than storing general data, i would also like to store backed up movies and music on it and have those folders shared on my network. I then would like to be able to play the files on a different pc without having to waste space on the other pc's by having to move the files over.

I would love to be able to be able to do that with 1080p video, but can deal with lower res if needed.

Ok the server system is an HP server board,Intel Pentium G6950 and 8GB of DDR3 ECC ram.

If onboard is not enough, how much GPU do i need? So i can dig through my spare cards and see if i have one good enough.

It depends on the software you're using, but generally, a GPU is of no real help for a file server. The onboard is only used for configuring the server, and then it runs headless (without a screen, keyboard, mouse permanently attached) or if you choose to leave the peripherals attached then it will just use onboard. What i might recommend, just for ease of use, is a software designed for Media distribution such as Plex or Emby. These can transcode video on the fly on the server which ensures that the content is able to be played on whatever device you choose to stream from, these software are built around an FFMPEG transcoder which is very CPU intensive, but utilities very little GPU. So, to summarise, on board will be fine :)

I suppose you could pick up a GT 210 and use one of those if your CPU has no integrated GPU.
