overclock GPU>CPU?

evo85210
Go to solution Solved by evo85210,

ok, so GPU overclock is more beneficial, thanks guys
i know my hardware is outdated, but i simply don't have the money to get new hardware right now
it's still holding up fine, so i'll probably keep using this until is won't do anymore

i mainly use my PC for gaming and 3D rendering

so i'm wondering if i would get more benefit from overclocking my GPU over overclocking my CPU
obviously I'd benefit the most from overclocking both, but that takes quite some time
i'm thinking of overclocking one first then do the other later (next yr? idk, when i have more time)

is there a standard order to overclock? or does it not matter?
I've heard AMD CPU doesn't go well with overclocking?
i'm also concerned as to if 450W will be enough to overclock

Spec:
MB: Gigabyte GA-M55S-S3 rev.2 (BIOS ver. FJI)
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 945 (95W)
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 550 Ti GDDR5 1G
RAM: DDR2 400 6G (kingsmax 2G*2 + elixir 2G*1)
PSU: Cooler Master 450W 80+Bronze
HDD: 500G RAID 0 (250+250)

Games I play:
League of Legends
Crysis 2 Maximum Edition
Dota 2

Mirror's Edge

Dead Space

Programs I use:
Autocad 2015
Revit 2015

Overclocking does help but that system is pretty outdated. So I'm not sure how much it'd help.

Overclocking my gpu gives me really good results. The cpu overclocks net me only a couple of fps unlike the gpu where I can get 5-20fps depending on the game.

there's no point of overclocking that processor... its too old. might aswell update your specs to a new processor and gpu.

GPU Will yield more results, but only noticeable on Crysis 2 and Watch dogs, the rest of your most common games are pretty lightweight.

Also as other mention, gains on your apps might not be that noticeable because your CPU is showing age. The most dramatic of all updates for you would be to go to a cheap i5 chip it would basically fly around your editing software, like night and day. But that's more of a project for later depending on your budget of course.

I got a few fps overclocking my CPU by over a GHz, when I overclocking my GPU by 100MHz I went from 93fps in my favorite game to 155fps LOL. I almost fell out of my chair lol. Go for the GPU overclock.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

so i get what ppl are saying about not overclocking and just updating the system... but thats like one of the main points of overclocking... to squeeze alil more power out of your system so you dont have to update it... or at least postpone the update... if you so choose

also yes overclocking your GPU will probably get you more FPS then your CPU... but imo since most games only take advantage of one of your CPUs cores, overclocking your CPU is pretty important too, so you can squeeze as much performance out of that one core as possible

also, depending on how much other stuff you have running off your PSU, you are cutting it pretty close with your power supply...
