Amazon Will Ban Sale of Apple TV and Google’s Chromecast

jos
Amazon.com Inc. is flexing its e-commerce muscles to gain an edge on competitors in the video-streaming market by ending the sale of devices from Google Inc. and Apple Inc.
The Seattle-based Web retailer sent an e-mail to its marketplace sellers that it will stop selling Apple TV and Google’s Chromecast. No new listings for the products will be allowed and posting of existing inventory will be removed Oct. 29, Amazon said. Amazon’s streaming video service, called Prime Video, doesn’t run easily on rival’s devices.

I feel this is anti competitive and awaiting a law suit..

Uh what.

Okay..um...

I literally have no words to describe my reaction this.

*Edit, after thinking about this a bit more and hearing other opinions on this matter I've come to this conclusion. Amazon is fully within their right to do this as it isn't anticompetitive, but it is a dickish move.

Having said that, are they going to remove all tablets and phones as well and only sell their Fire tablets/phones(I know they stopped selling this, but it's an example) then? Where do they draw the line?

To me it should be all or nothing.

Honestly does smell a bit like it crosses the anti-competitive behavior line.  Obviously google doesn't have to sell Apple's devices from their play store, but Amazon purports itself to be a "marketplace" and is crossing a line by not even allowing 3rd party sellers to sell competing products.

Not sure why everyone thinks this is anticompetitive, legally speaking.  They aren't telling other retailers they can't sell someone else's product.  They are simply no longer selling a competitor's product in their own store.  It both does and doesn't make sense.  On the one hand, the more variety you have the more likely you will get customers.  On the other hand, selling the competitor's product may cost you more in lost profits than you would have gained from their sales.

Article makes it seems like they're removing third party listings too:

Amazon told sellers it will not allow new listings and will remove existing inventory later this month, a report from Bloomberg said.

Pretty sure they already know how anti-competitive laws work... I wonder what kind of excuse are they gonna use. Cause those two players Amazon's poking aren't messing around.

amazon isnt just a marketplace for u to list you used items.  it is their store they can sell whatever, however they want.  but it seems like a huge gamble that wont pay off since their vid service is hard to use.  i bet there will be a retracted statement and policy soon

What makes you think you can ruin this pitch fork moment? I like my ignorance nice and up to my neck, thank you very much.

Seriously, I wonder how so many people on LTT ever passed 2nd grade. Why aren't you outraged that Apple stores don't sell Android products, Kindle or fireTV?

Because you're foolish if you don't know the implications of this.  Amazon has a huge market share.  When people think online shopping, they think Amazon.  For amazon to push others out of competition because they have such a large market share to promote their own product is the VERY DEFINITION of antitrust.
