I have been using Networx by SoftPerfect. It allows you to monitor everything that goes out of your computer, as well as share this information with the other computers on your network. Alternatively, if you have an SNMP or UPnP capable router, it can also monitor that so you only need to install it on one computer that is on 24/7.

If you are able to put 3rd party firmware (like DD-WRT or Tomato) on your router, some of these firmware can keep track of usage on its own. Some of them also support SNMP as well if you wish to monitor using cacti (as suggested by schizznick).

The router i have is the ASUS AC66U and it has a bandwith monitor built in.

Unlike my old Netgear WNDR3700 if u reset the ASUS router just by powering off and on then it wipes the bandwith logs.

http://www.solarwinds.com/products/freetools/network_analyzer_bandwidth_monitoring_bundle.aspx

or

you'll need to do some digging in terms of the license, but from memory you can configure up to 100 reporting agents/endpoints before you need to purchase a licence. This software is used in enterprise also so it'll also give you skills a boost
