Personal router on a private network

Hi! (this is my first post, so don't blame me if I do something wrong  )

So I'm living in a college residence where both wired and wireless networks go through a captive portal, and I need to re-login every day. I was wondering if I could hook up a router to the wired network so I can have the new chromecast audio and also be able to use my network printer and Pushbullet Portal again, as well as enabling my VPN settings to all my devices without hassles (my residence logs everything, so VPN is kind of mandatory for a bit of privacy) with the possibility of re-logging in through a connected computer or a phone easily.

Cheers~

I know that you can add a second router to a network, even if you don't have access to the main router, you only need to change the local network IP of the new router to something like 192.168.2.1 (instead of 192.168.1.1)

Which would work similar to a switch/access point, that gets its internet access from the main router.

That's what I'm doing here at home considering the main router is in the basement and the wifi signal doesn't reach the upper floors.

But, you say you need to "log back in" every once in a while, so I don't really know... Maybe you could do something about that with DD-WRT and some custom command or with PPPoE.
