is the nintendo DS still a thing?

hsm

the last time i checked into the semi-serious portable gaming thing was with a Gameboy Color but i remeber when the DSi came out it was all the rage and i wanted a light blue one so bad. but i never really cared about the platform because i was like 10 when it came out and didn't really care about the games themselves that much. i still see ad's for like these huge tablet looking DS's and im pretty sure they are 3D which is like their main selling point. im surprised to think they can still be selling well because 3D is a gimick of the past and im guessing modern cellphones have more computing power than the DS, and i cant imagine the bratty kids of today carrying around "game cartridges." anyone still rocking some nintendo hardware or did the DS just contribute to their demise.

I still use my DS Lite and 3DS.

Even take my 3DS (original one) to internship and school to play on the breaks. I can emulate Pokemon, or I can play the real deal new ones.

(PS. had the DS Lite since I was about 10. Have had original GameBoy since.. born, because it is still my dad's old one. Have a whole bunch of other GameBoys too)

I got a 3ds XL to play the new pokemon games because.. pokemon.. so I mean that's a thing.. and it's actually quite fairly priced in that just under $200 USD. the 3D is optional and can be turned on and off it's really cool though since it doesn't require glasses.

also.. did I mention pokemon??

Edit: I don't like what they've done with the "new 3ds" because i think the new placement of certain bits like where the power button and cartridge are now. I feel that was a bad idea on their part.

Sorry for the thread lock. Moved to Mobile Devices.

That makes me wonder: Should threads about portable consoles, in particular those from Nintendo or Sony, be posted in mobile devices or in console gaming? Tbh, I always assumed the latter so far.

The 3DS is currently Nintendo's best selling hardware. (Not all time, that trophy goes to the original Wii.)

Since we have a sub-forum for mobile gaming, I moved it to there.

We should be wondering about the PS vita instead, Sony cut off first party support for it and I haven't heard much about it in a while

I still have the very first one that came out with small screens and thick bezels and thick everything. I used to play a lot of Mario 64 on it if my memory is correct.

I just wish there were better games on the 3DS. All I have on the 3DS is Pokemon. But man, the DS were the times.

Seems to me that the OP is behind the times. The 3DS is a proven success, just as the DS Lite before it. Carrying around game cartridges isn't a hindrance at all, and the 3DS has an eShop for the chumps that don't want to buy <cheaper> physical copies.

3D isn't a gimmick either. It might be unappealing to certain people, but that doesn't make it any less effective or mean that it doesn't add another level of immersion to the games.

DS Lite is a great system with a myriad of great games. If you like mobile gaming, then it would behoove you to play/buy one because the experience is better and different than playing on a more-powerful smart phone.

This is hysterical.  If I didn't know better I'd say you are being a troll... very subtle.  Otherwise you seem quite out of touch with reality.  Let's go down the list... shall we?

>Huge tablet looking DS?  While the 3DS XL isn't exactly skinny jeans pocket size, it remains quite portable, and still a good deal more space efficient than an iPad.

>3D hasn't felt like a selling point since a year after introduction... Though the new updated 3D for the New 3DS does magic on making the 3D actually usable.

>3D is a gimmick of the past?  Maybe, but once again.  You imply Nintendo has no other selling points for their consoles.

>Modern cells phones get constantly more powerful... more powerful than a Vita even... Then again cellphones don't really have dedicated hardware controls, and are themselves outdated within months.

>"bratty kids."  You were 10 at the release of the DSi in 2009.  6 years later... you are 16?

And finally.  Yes.  I rock a N3DS XL.  It's a lovely system with an excellent game library that extends back to the DS era.  It's not powerful or high tech by any standards, but nothing is 6 months later.  I have no clue what you mean by the DS contributing to their demise.  It was one of the best selling handhelds if not the best.  The DSi didn't sell quite as hotly, but the 3DS is by no means a failure.  Both the Wii U and the 3DS live in the shadows of their predecessors which are truly epic in sales.  I have no intentions of using a smartphone for serious gaming if only for the fact that soft controls are crap compared to a solid hardware setup.  (And that's totally ignoring the game library both the Vita and the 3DS carry.)

tl;dr: No.  The DS is no longer a "thing."  It's been succeeded by the Nintendo 3DS.

@hsm

and still a good deal more space efficient than an iPad.

Indeed. And when it needs to be portable (closed), it's nearly as small as the huge smart phones most people [and kids] are trying to get into their paws.

I have an iPhone 6, and I had a '5 before it. I still miss the size of the '5.  The 6 Plus and other brands' competition is just way too big for me.  And too big for more people than would care to admit.

>Modern cells phones get constantly more powerful... more powerful than a Vita even... Then again cellphones don't really have dedicated hardware controls, and are themselves outdated within months.

Smart phones:  Jack of all trades, master of none.

It's the same reason that people say all-in-one printers/scanners/copiers are garbage.. but to a lesser degree (smart phones aren't garbage, but the analogy is valid).

Nintendo has never been known for cutting-edge technology. Instead, innovation, clever ideas, and fun games.  I can name 20 to 30 really good DS and 3DS games off the top of my head.  I bet money that most people can't think of nearly that many smart phone games that aren't throw-aways... and even then would probably have to google "best smart phone games."  I have zero games on my iPhone. It's just not fun.

>"bratty kids."  You were 10 at the release of the DSi in 2009.  6 years later... you are 16?

Ha!  I hadn't even noticed that. Nice catch.  The pot calling the kettle black, eh?   Many kids just have blinders on and become infatuated with the only thing they've ever known and resist others.   I'll be 36 at the end of the year.  How old are you?
