Volkswagen ordered to recall 500,000 cars, faces $18 Billion fine over emissions defeating software

Source 3: http://www.bbc.com/news/business-34345210

  • Volkswagen illegally installed software in its diesel-power cars to evade standards for reducing smog

  • caused certain emissions control systems to only turn on during emissions tests

  • during normal driving situations the controls are turned off

  • this causes the cars to spew as much as 40 times the pollution allowed under the Clean Air Act

  • recall involves 4-cylinder Volkswagen and Audi vehicles from 2009-2015 in the US

  • affected models are certain model years of the Volkswagen Jetta, Beetle, Golf, Passat, and Audi A3

  • Shares dropped approximately 35%

  • CEO Martin Winterkorn resigns amid emissions scandal

    • Was meeting with board  before scandal to discuss his future

  • US E.P.A’s (Environmental Protection Agency) assistant called the automaker’s actions “a threat to public health”

  • US Justice Department could impose fines as much as $37,500 for each recalled vehicle, with the overall penalty totaling as much as $18 billion

  • one German media report has suggested that this expands beyond the US and beyond VW

  • reported that the BMW X3 Xdrive 20d exceeds European emissions standards by a shocking 11 times, according to Auto Bild

  • BMW issued a denial of any manipulation, saying “There is no difference in the treatment of exhaust emissions whether they are on (test) rollers or on the road.”

  • European managing editor of the International Council on Clean Transportation, Peter Mock, told Auto Bild “all measured data suggest that this is not a VW-specific issue.”

  • BMW shares also dropped 7% on September 24

  • the reason the impact on BMW’s shares may not have been as severe as the impact on VW’s shares is that this issue is not as pervasive in their product line

  • West Virginia University and EPA specifically looked at a BMW X5 as part of investigations into the issue

  • the X5 passed their testing

  • important to note that almost every car has higher real-world emissions than their laboratory results

  • this alone is not a breach of regulation due to there being an acceptable margin of error

  • the UK government has stated that today they will be launching their own vehicle emissions testing following the US’s findings

  • UK Transport Secretary Patrick Mcloughlin said the move was to ensure the issue of emissions cheating was not industry-wide

  • this is very much an emerging story, and we expect more information will become available over the coming days and weeks

Source 2: http://arstechnica.com/business/2015/09/north-america

  • Internet running out of most common IP addresses, IPv4

  • Won’t affect users, but will put more pressure on service providers, software companies and large organizations to migrate to IPv6

  • IPv4 limited to almost 4 billion addresses

  • IPv6 will provide 340 undecillion addresses (undecillion = 1 followed by 36 zeroes, 8.5x10^28 more addresses than IPv4)

  • Already supported by all major OS’s

  • IPv4 and IPv6 aren’t entirely compatible

    • If on a IPv6 network, you can’t browse a site running IPv4

    • Service providers have done well to support both standards already

    • Most smartphones already run IPv6

There's plenty of phones out there with a 3.5mm jack; I think Luke/Linus' point was that they don't need to get any thinner than they are now, especially at the expense of battery capacity.

Hey Linus and LMG guys. Is there anyway you guys could run a compresser/limiter for the WAN show. Or maybe a Bass roll off EQ. Everytime you guys hit the table or mouse lift, the audio gets crazy loud. It would improve the experience for the listener.

Hey Linus and LMG guys. Is there anyway you guys could run a compresser/limiter for the WAN show. Or maybe a Bass roll off EQ. Everytime you guys hit the table or mouse lift, the audio gets crazy loud. It would improve the experience for the listener.

Hey there. Instead of doing that, the mic could be moved up onto a stand or something so it is off camera. Audio quality will still be great if the mic is JUST off screen, but it's a BIG mic and this solution might get the shock mount problem out of the way. But hey, pop filter!

Yeah, that would work too

There's plenty of phones out there with a 3.5mm jack; I think Luke/Linus' point was that they don't need to get any thinner than they are now, especially at the expense of battery capacity.

Damn the internet and it's inability to transfer sarcasm.

Really I don't see why apple doesn't come out with some kind of super professional grade iphone that has like 8000mah total battery life, and like 4GBs of RAM, with 2 micro SD slots for added storage, and a USB 3.1 type-C connector, and it comes in an high durability case that can support the weight of a truck, but, ya know, whatever. Apple seems to hate things that are functional

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Great video. But PLEASE PUT THE AFTERPARTY ON You Tube !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not everyone can watch the live feed. It sounds like you have had important stuff on the after-party, but not everyone around the world due to time zone issues can watch the live feed.

Have some consideration for viewers around the world.

Otherwise do not have a after-party and have everything in the show.

This is not very professional Linus.

WTH guys, you tease @Slick 's news then don't deliver it but send it to afterparty which cannot be viewed for non-live users. I know you want to encourage live viewership, but please for the love of all that is holy, post that to youtube.

Great show! And yea probably best to either put the after party on youtube, or some sort of a quick video with the news - easier than sending out all these emails anyway (probably).
