US is falling behind the world on LTE speeds

sylarspock

We need MOAR  Speed.

I believe most mobile networks lack Capacity rather than Speed.
Most of them start crawling in crowded locations and peak hour.

OpenSignal's most recent report about the state of global LTE coverage and download speeds tells some familiar stories. As we've seen in previous years, it's Asian nations such as South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong that offer customers the best coverage (97 percent, 90 percent, and 86 percent respectively), while the US lags just a little behind (78 percent) and European countries like the UK and Germany pop up towards the middle of the list. However, when it comes to download speeds on LTE networks, some countries rank surprisingly high, reflecting the fact that it's sometimes better to come a little late to the party, when all the best technology is already in place.

New Zealand is a good example. The country only launched its LTE mobile networks two years ago, but in OpenSignal's speed tests it came out top, with average speeds of 36Mbps — ahead of both Singapore and South Korea, which were second and fourth place respectively. And which country took that number three spot? It's "relative newcomer" Romania, which already has access to LTE-Advanced and 4G networks on multiple bands.

Meanwhile, some countries which introduced LTE relatively early on (including the US, Japan, Sweden, and Germany) are starting to see their data speeds suffer by comparison. The US, for example, despite impressive coverage for such a large nation, only recorded average download speeds of 10Mbps — taking a spot towards the bottom of OpenSignal's table, sandwiched between India and Indonesia.

"In part, these older networks are suffering from their own success," notes OpenSignal. "In the US, for instance, LTE’s introduction in 2010 resulted in a huge base of LTE subscribers in the country today. Those subscribers are all competing for the same network resources, slowing down average speeds. In comparison, newer networks in South America and Europe are more lightly loaded." This first mover disadvantage isn't a hard and fast rule, though, and countries such as South Korea have managed to keep up by expanding their networks into new frequencies and upping their capacity. The US can still do the same.

1 bar of Optus LTE, download speeds over 100mbps. If the US can't manage that with better coverage then they are really having issues.

Let's be honest: the LTE servers are congested as fuck over in the US of A.

I was talking about the CBD. Inside a concrete carpark 2 stories underground. In the huge amounts of areas without ADSL people are lucky to get 1 bar of 3G and since so many people are forced to use it......dialup is better.

Here in Australia I can easily get download speeds in the 90-100+Mbps zone on LTE when I'm in a city with lots of cell towers and excellent signal strength.

That's compared to the 4.5-5Mbps I get with my home internet.

And we musn't forget that for around 60 pounds in the UK you can get unlimited LTE, while over here you pay about the same for only a few GB of data. #FuckTelstra+Optus

Yup hence my conclusion that it's network capacity, (number of base stations etc) rather than having newer faster technologies.

Is UK really that expensive? I would have thought it to be closer to our prices in Finland where I pay 23€ for unlimited LTE with real world speeds of around 70mbps (advertised as 150Mbps)

Not that this is much of an excuse but most of those countries, even the European ones, have such horrible coverage of internet that the only way they can get decent internet outside of the city is through their mobile phones. It's much cheaper and easier to plop down a cell tower than it is to run wire underground for internet...so cell coverage in a lot of countries is getting pretty good.

I'm in Croatia and I'm surprised by this chart. But anyway, who cares when there are caps for that. What I want is fiber already and for normal price.

my thoughts exactly haha

It makes me wonder how expensive it is to do this if we aren't doing it. But then, why is India or Malaysia ahead of us? I mean damn, we're dead last. :o

this test is a bit mis-informing.

why is romania that high? because the amount of users who USE the 4G net is lower, MUCH lower, thus the network itself isnt as congested and traffic is given higher speeds.

Why is norway so low?
Because everyone and their mother has 4G enabled all the time (and most people do NOT restrict background data while device is on standby on their phones and tablets) so a mediocre network complimented by heavy saturation causes insane  low speeds.

Go 20minutes outside of the cities (40k inhabitants and up) in norway and you have an average DL speed of 25-30MBs on 4G network (Netcom)....

US probably got stuff being worked out, maybe they haven't figured out how to screw the consumers with bs, extra fee to justify a network upgrade.

Australia has like one of the best mobile instrusture for a first world country, although that can't be said for those isps like Tesltra.

The US is just because the congestion when not everyone  had LTE Phones Speeds were faster on ATT & Verizon mainly. I have Tmobile and Pull on average 25mbps But i can see as low as 10mbps  and high as 65mbps in Populated areas none populated areas i cant make phone calls also Not all countries are big as us and getting a high average over a small amount of land is much easier  ( Verizon LTE when i used it i only pulled like 5mbps-8mbps with full bars seems like they honestly Limit it )

For once my country it's not in the low spots of the chart when it comes to internet, unfortunately I couldn't care less about 4G, I still have a Galaxy S2.

The only reason Australia's LTE isn't congested to shit from people using it over there terrible adsl is because our isp's are yet again stingy and expensive with majority of phone plans having 1gb-3gb cap and $10 per 1 gb extra.

We do have pretty good coverage though, i'll give them that and only that.
