Titan super computer folding ?

I know this would never happen unless a billionaire stepped in. My question is how many wu's do you think we could get through in an hour using the titan super computer ?

They use a HEAVLY customized Linux based OS, apps wouldn't even run.

well.. the thing about folding is that it's distributing the work to volunteers so they dont have to pay the ungodly amount of money to get a supercomputer to do the work.

Problem is that it would require an almost completely proprietary version of the program to actually run. Not worth it, given the cost of the Titan supercomputer to even run in the first place. They have more pressing things to do than to brute-force protein chains for free.

Doesn't actually matter that much, the Folding@home network is approximately twice as powerful as the Titan is. The public network is nothing to sniff at.

You could run Windows on them... They just wouldn't be very optimized for it. They'd certainly kill anything we have, but it would be cut in half versus what it could do on a custom Linux Distro.

No, you LITERALLY can't run Windows on it. Or really any normal OS. They are physically so different from normal hardware that it would just be impossible. Windows runs on our machines because it has drivers for consumer grade stuff, which is VASTLY different than what the Titan uses.

4.1 Trolling

This includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Creating threads for the sole purpose of causing unrest on the forums.
  • Causing disturbances in forum threads such as picking fights or insulting other members.
  • Making non-constructive posts for the purpose of causing unrest.  This includes posting LMGTFY links.
  • Abusing the Report Post feature by sending false alarms or nonsensical messages
  • Labelling a thread, IBTL, TLDR, or any other fad statements.
  • Replying to a thread simply to call the author a troll (regardless of whether the post is actually trolling)
  • Excessive use of different fonts / font colors for non post formatting purposes will result in moderative action.
  •

I had no idea that was there. Apparently the mods don't really mind?

What if IBM's Watson did this?

probably the same power as my laptop

It prolly wrecks every computer listed for folding combined.  It's considered one of the top tier super computers.

BUT

its not

Unless all of the CPU cores were pooled together so a work unit could actually be done in an hour, 0.

Here's some (really sketchy) math I did:

GPUs

My 270 can do 2304 GFLOPS, and on the smallest WU I've seen it do it takes 8 hours.

The K20X can do 3950 GFLOPS. So based on compute power alone (not counting different drivers, OS, or anything), it would take 4.7 hours to complete 1 work unit.

GPUs are kinda out of the question now :/ (again, not counting OS, drivers, etc)

CPUs

My FX6300 (Piledriver, although hopefully you'll agree that it's really quite similar to Bulldozer) is currently sitting doing a WU that has an ETA of about 6 hours 40 mins using 5 of it's 6 threads. (reserving a thread for the GPU)

Although the 6274s Titan uses are based on Bulldozer, the single-core performance is quite similar AFAIK. These chips have 16 threads, and then when you reserve a core for the GPU you're left with 15 threads (I'll explain later in this post why I'm doing this)

So (based on my flawed maths) it would take around 2 1/4 hours to do a WU.

So there's where I got my answer of 0 from, purely based on the fact that if we took each component and gave it a WU, it wouldn't have enough time to complete it.

Here's where it get's interesting.

As I mentioned before, if we could pool together CPUs, we could get a lot done in 1 hour. If we put 3 CPUs to work on 1 WU, we would get about 2800 points per cluster of 3. Scale that across the entire Supercomputer and you could do 6229WUs, resulting in 14,352,384 points in an hour. I think this is more the answer you were looking for, but I'm not quite done yet.

If we were to bend the rules of the question, and have access to the supercomputer for, let's say 5 hours and then take an average, then things change completely.

If the GPUs got a really easy WU, and were allowed to finish it (this is why I left a CPU thread free in the first part), each of them would give around 28000 points per WU.

28000 points per GPU across the 18,688 GPUs is 523,264,000 points.

Now if we calculate the average for the hour, we get 104,652,800 points

Since we averaged the points, we have to average the number of WUs, which is simply 3737 (18688 / 5)

So now we've bent the rules of the question:

Total number of WUs in the hour: 9966.

Total number of Points generated: 119,005,184

Power bill based on my energy costs: £1230 for 1 single hour

it wouldnt be worth it to fold on the titan?

Uh, no.

As other members have pointed out, you CAN'T fold on Titan, due to the way it's configured. Couple that with the fact that it runs a custom version of Linux and you can be certain Titan won't ever fold.

Ya I know the titan couldn't fold I mean like think of how many wu's you could complete with that hardware if it was running a setup that you could fold on and everything worked
