Lenovo B50-30 review.. Jesus H Christ...

techswede

After inconclusive answers on this forum i went and bought a laptop for school. Just went for the first of my options to show up in a store.
Which was the Lenovo B50-30 500gig version. And if anyone cares. This is what it looks like.

When i got it home i got the laptop out of the box and had a look around to find the Windows key that is usually on a sticker somewhere.. But it was nowhere to be found...

Turns out it only gives you the option to use their "One key recovery" malarky.

"Well shit.." i thought since i missed out on a spare windows key. But oh well i'm hopefully not going back to windows on this anyway.

And Lenovo is now forever on my shit list for not giving me any plastic to peel off. I have been robbed of the best feeling ever..

Now. I thought it would be fun to see how it was from the factory since everyone was mentioning the bloatware on it.

So i went through the windows 8 installation that i swear was designed for a small child "Look at these pretty colours as we do things for you"

And upon completion and restart i was greeted by enough pop ups to rival one of those "fill your screen with porn popups" virus links..

When i got past all of those i saw a third of the screen covered in programs that were of no use to me whatsoever.

Tried uninstalling them but after a few minutes i got bored. Would probably take 30-45 minutes to get rid of all that..

So i played around with it for a bit. And it seems alright for the price. It isn't snappy but it gets there.

The build quality is so-so. It is very plasticy and feels a bit spongy in some places. But i wasn't expecting Dell 7737 build quality anyways so whatever.

This is a school laptop. It might get dropped, stolen, covered in coffee, smashed, thrown out a window, set fire to,shot, shat on or all of the above so it needed to be cheap

Everything seems to be working at the moment though *knocks on wood* so i'm happy with it.

Build quality: 5/10

Speed: 6/10

Bloatware: Fuck off lenovo/10

Would i reccomend it to a friend that just needs a laptop. No

Should i return it. Yes

Will i return it. Can't be arsed

Now i'm going to start the process of installing Fedora 22 on it. Which is apparantly going to be a bit of a chore

Will report back with my findings and a longer term review.

I don't know about newer models, but i had a Lenovo laptop back in 2006, and it died in 2012. It was a beast laptop, build quality wise. Sure, it was plastic, but it was extremely sturdy. Hell, in my 6 years of owning it, i only once (or maybe twice) changed the HDD, something i did 2 times in only 2 years of owning a Toshiba laptop. I threw it, opened it, played with it... It only died because i fried it's mobo by hitting it (i know, not the smartest thing to do).

If anyone is interested, the Lenovo laptop i'm talking about is Lenovo 3000 n100.

Was probably better back then. This one is well on its way to pissing off a zen buddhist..

  • 1 month later...

So, Now that i've lived with this laptop for a few months i think i have a pretty good idea of what i like and what i don't like.
Keep in mind that this is with Ubuntu 14.04 installed so mileage with windows 8.1 may vary
Pros:
The battery life is completely adequate for school use. But only for two classes in a row without charging in between.
So far i have no problems to report in terms of reliability or slowdown.
It is almost completely silent. Haven't heard the fan spin up even once during class.
Cons:
My god this thing is plasticy. I almost want to call it flimsy. Everything flexes a bit with a small amount of pressure.

The keyboard feels like i'm typing on a trampoline. It flexes up and down about 1-1.5mm when i'm typing and i'm pretty light on the keys.
There is a slight delay when starting up a program. 5-10 seconds is my guess. (Putting that down to the harddrive)

Those are the main issues i've encountered so far. I might add more later.
I like to do my reviews this way. Initial impressions-Long term-Even longer term.

I hope this laptop is not too bad... I have really bad experience with laptops in this price range.

Does it deliver for 300 € price tag?

It is what i'd expect from a 300€ laptop. Not great. But not horrid either. (As long as you do something about the insane level of bloatware that comes preinstalled)

I own one of these too. Must say I actually found the build quality and performance surprising considering the price it's available for in the UK - the biggest limiting factor of it is the fact it comes with a hard drive instead of an SSD, but you can hardly expect different for a ~£200 laptop.
