Pcie 16x socket stuck in 8x

Penfookio

My M4A79 Deluxe is speced at x16 on most sockets, but even in the bios it is showing a max of 8x. My wife comp is the same build with a much cheaper video card, her comp show her sockets are 16x. Only difference is i have an updated bios hers is stock. My first thought is to update the bios but it says it update rom is invaild. Ive tried a couple older bios builds but all invalid. It seems like asus has abandoned this motherboard all together. My other thought is to just replace the board but my amd phenom II x4 940 doesn't have any new boards. any thought to how this issue can be resolved other then building me a new pc?

What slot is your card in (assuming it has multiple x16 slots)?

I'm pretty sure performance won't be affected whether you're in 8x or 16x.

Although, if you look around in the BIOS, there should be an option about PCIe bus speed or w/e.

bios options limit to 8x :( went that option already. the card is in a 16x slot. Hell it says on the board pcie16x.

Only the top one will operate at x16. After that I think it's hardwired to x8 and then x4, so make sure your card is in the top slot.

its in the top slot i moved it around checking the bios each time it doesn't change. to me it seem like it is a bios issue. but updating doesn't want to work.

According to your board's specs, it has 4 pcie x16 slots (2 blue and 2 black), The blues ones run at x16. When a card is installed into the black slot then the blue slot will run at x8.

Try the bottom blue x16 slot and see if it runs at x16.

Reset your bios back to defaults and the last bios for your board is 4101

Try your gpu in your wife's computer and see if it runs at x16.

its important to check to make sure the card has not become damaged somehow

Troubleshooting a pc will make you believe in gremlins.
