FreeNas Help

k1ng_alex

Hello,

I have a freeNas server running and I am planing on taking it to college with me.

There are ethernet jacks in my residence room but I am hoping someone can help me make it secure.

I would only want me and my roommate to have access to it.

Thanks

Make accounts and you guys need to just log in when you need it.

Passwords can be broken. You should find some sort of router that you can use as a firewall. I think some colleges keep every room on its own vlan too.

My native language is C++

Just plug a router into the jack - then people would need to be on that router in order to access the nas.

Maybe you can use your own router, and place everything behind your router, you're nat type will change but most of the time that is not a problem.

With freenas you can also put passwords on accounts and disable root login with ssh.

Don't you just love tech?

Keep in mind that you'll most likely be violating your school's technology AUP by bringing a router, unless they have a BYOD policy. I'd check with them.

Heres the room set up.

POE jack which goes into a cisco ip phone, the phone has two ethernet ports on it one for power and calling the other for your computer.

I setup a router everything worked great I had wifi in my room no issues, a few hours later my router stopped working, my phone and laptop(macbook pro) could not connect to it wirelessly, but the wired connection did.

Bought a used router on kijiji had the same issue router works fine wired but wirelessly it just times out when you click to join it.

I have tried reseting it - nothing

I disabled the password - nothing

I reset and just plugged in the internet -nothing.

The only thing i can see that i messed up was , just for fun i plugged the router into the POE jack to see if i could get better speeds.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
