Is my CPU really this hot?

Wreighn

Hello everyone.

Up untill recently I've been using an A6-6400k APU, but recently I switched to the 860k.

I already had a topic open about the heating issues with the A6-6400k, but in the end we came to a conclusion that the sensors are wrong.

Now that I've bought this new CPU, I'm getting the same tempertures.

To answer some of the possible questions:

This is how the inside of my case looks like:

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=26192EE765EF23DE!3892&authkey=!AL6gZhwBnkJinmo&v=3&ithint=photo%2cjpg

Before starting this topic again, I wanted to make sure that my thermal paste was installed correctly, so I used this one:

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=26192EE765EF23DE!3891&authkey=!AOWlM7yQy9o0n7U&v=3&ithint=photo%2cjpg

Its a cheap 1.5g thermal paste that I bought for what would be a little more than 3 dolars.

I placed it onto the CPU like this:

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=26192EE765EF23DE!3889&authkey=!AD5wSo_koBlZyPk&v=3&ithint=photo%2cjpg

Afterwards I pressed the stock heatsink onto the CPU, and ended up with this:

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=26192EE765EF23DE!3890&authkey=!APJbEmQshsSolmk&v=3&ithint=photo%2cjpg

In the following video I will show you the idle temperature of the CPU, and the fan, and afterwards, I will run a stress test on the CPU, and notice how the temperature rises to 112c.

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=26192EE765EF23DE!3893&authkey=!AJuAR5T9E4oaDxg&ithint=video%2cmp4 (Opera failed to play the video for me, but it works with IE)

I don't think I've made any mistake in installing the heatsink, and the thermal paste, but the temperatures I'm getting are really high. If I have made any mistakes, please point them out, any help would be appreciated. The reason I'm reopening this topic is because a friend of mine who's good with tech told me that CPUs can reach temperatures that high, and still run stable. I also found people on the internet claiming that their CPUs are running at those temperatures. Of course, it could still be that the temperature readings from the sensors are totally off, as I concluded in the first place, but I would like to hear your opinions on this.

iirc amd lies about temps

Is there any solid way to confirm that the readings I'm getting are false?

Everything from the way I applied the thermal paste to how the fan is spinning appears to be by the book. Buying another cooling solution is not that cheap for me, so I would like to avoid making that investment unless absolutely necessary.

its most likely a lower temp probably under 90C, iirc amd motherboards have the problem where they show the temps higher than what they actually are

112 is above tjmax, it would have turned off.

Also, double check if it's Celsius or Fahrenheit. If it's Fahrenheit, then you're fine

It reached a max of 114C (236F). It can be seen in the video. The radiator is warm to touch when the CPU is under load, feels a bit hot, but not hot enough to burn my hand, or hurt it any way, even if I hold it for a long amount of time. As for when its idle, I can barely feel any heat by touching it, and at idle it shows temps that fluctuate between 63ish and 70c (sometimes wild sudden jumps to 80 and back). Does the amount of thermal paste look right to you?

I'm camping right now so I don't have enough signal for videos. Sounds like a bad sensor. As for the amount, about pea sized is enough

Make sure the heatsink is actually installed correctly.

Sounds dumb, but I learned that heatsinks can be a real bitch to install properly.

They can seem installed but aren't actually 100% in contact with the CPU, which can cause your CPU temps to skyrocket.

Of course like other people have mentioned, it could just be a faulty temperature reading, but it's best to check everything else first before assuming it's reading incorrectly.

Umm ya I knew APUs ran hot and when I saw 24c I was amazed, then I saw 1xxc and hit the wall. I would think that is a thermal compound problem or that the heat sink is just extremely not adequate for an A6 & Athlon. I would also say get an AIO or nice tower cooler.

A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.

This is actually the second time I've installed thermal paste, and both times I got the same results. Although, one strange thing was, after removing it the second time (first time I removed it with the stock cooler heatsink preapplied, and everything was covered), a small area of the CPU was not covered at all.

It maybe looked something like this (I probably missed the direction, but you get the point): https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=26192EE765EF23DE!3888&authkey=!AIOr9iS-o7mfz3s&v=3&ithint=photo%2cjpg

Now after applying it the second time, I hope it spread correctly. Maybe I just didn't add enough last time. Check the picture, and tell me if I went wrong with the amount of thermal paste.

This is the stock AMD cooler that I got with the CPU.

That is right then your CPU is 5c away from a thermal throttle which is not good! :(

That is right then your CPU is 5c away from a thermal throttle which is not good! :(

Oh, thats how it works :(

Well, I guess I'm getting a new cooler.

Yeah probably safest, you just had bad silicon lottery luck probably... :(

What cooler did you have? If it is the default one then you probably need/want a new one...

My previous CPU kept getting the same temps (maybe a bit lower).

I had a topic open about that one, but in the end I just ruled it out as a faulty sensor.

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/289132-is-my-cpu-running-hot/

102c is clearly a bit to high for it to be right but that your CPU is 5c from thermal throttle is more likely! :D (max should be around 68c?)

102c is clearly a bit to high for it to be right but that your CPU is 5c from thermal throttle is more likely! :D (max should be around 68c?)

The old CPU kept running at those high temps till I got this new one, and not they carried on to it xD

So, I guess it survived running at >100c for 8 months.

I didn't change it cos it was working badly, I just wanted an upgrade.

How long do you think this one can last before it starts getting damaged.

Nobody knows... I guess its at 63c right now if its 5c away from max? :P ( I cannot remember if max was 68c or 70c...)

Quick update regarding the temperatures:

Someone on the internet mentioned using Core Temp and getting good results, so I tried it as well, and the results were drastically different for the better.

This is the screenshot of the CPU at load:

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=26192EE765EF23DE!3901&authkey=!AEHToZ-q8DwgiOI&v=3&ithint=photo%2cPNG

It climbed from a lower temperature onto 60c, and fluctuated between 59c and 60c, but was mostly stable at 60c.

After turning off the stress test, the temperature reverted back over time to somewhere around 15c:

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=26192EE765EF23DE!3900&authkey=!AMZ7z2eSque_xeE&v=3&ithint=photo%2cPNG

Now, the max temp of 60c looks way more plausible to me, but is 15c really correct as an idle temperature?

If your CPU would be that hot, it wouldn't work. As simple as that.
