New build for girlfriend! Intel VS AMD

Go to solution Solved by OAcesync,

Why would I need an APU, when I already have a GTX 460?

Well then just get something like a i3. I'm just saying those would be the only CPUs I would for the build

Okay guys, first of all, let's not be biased here.

We're looking for bang for the buck.

I'll try to spend as little as possible, and get as much performance as possible. My max will be around 2000 DKK. +- a bit.  That's around 267€ and 308$ USD

She'll be using the PC for:

  • Youtube videos / TV Series
  • Browsing / surfing
  • MAYBE a bit of drawing (Photoshop?)
  • Games
  • The Sims 3
  • Hearthstone
  • Facebook games.

So far here's my build.

Seems like AMD is the way to go here?

Intel build

  • i5 4460 1425kr ~190€ ~219$
  • mobo cheapest 583kr ~78€ ~90$

Total 2008 kr ~268€ ~ 309$

AMD build

  • FX-6300 809kr ~108€ ~ 125$
  • mobo cheapest 435kr ~58€ ~67$
  • SSD Intenso 128gb 402kr ~54€ ~ 62$
  • Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo 293 Kr ~39€ ~ 45$

Total 1939 kr ~258€ ~ 298$

NEW i3 build introduced as suggested

I3 build

  • i3-4130 919kr ~ 122€ ~ 142$
  • mobo ASRock H81 Pro BTC 583kr ~78€ ~90€
  • SSD Intenso 128gb 402kr ~54€ ~ 62$

note: Here I won't need the EVO; as Intel stock Coolers tend to be quiet.

Total 1904kr ~ 254€ ~ 293$

1$ = 6.5kr
1€ = 7.5kr

--- As for the GPU, I already bought her a used MSI NGTX460 1GB for 300 kr

I have 2x8GB Crucial Ballistix ram, I'll just loan her 1x8 gb stick, until we get another payday

I really hate to do this to you guys, but... WILL NOT BE OVERCLOCKING!!!!!!!!!!!!! BOOOM!!!!!! OH NO!! STAPH!!!! - Well no need lol xD

-I ordered the i3 build. Seems to make most sense in her case.

Had it been NEWER games, or triple a titles, id might've been a difference choice.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR INPUT! Helped me out A LOT.

To be honest id be siding with an APU.

Although Intel 1150 is better in the long run as long as you have the money at this time.

intel because when she comes to upgrade her gpu, that  cpu will start to bottleneck.

Intel all the way.

At this point in time, I see no reason to go for AMD unless the system is going to be running off of integrated graphics, and you need that extra power from it. (Though even then, intel has been doing pretty decent with integrated graphics recently)

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

Even though you get all that with the AMD? lol

So the choice here is intel for more "future proofing"?

Is the socket 1150 going to continue longer anyway? Or will I have to change mobo in like 5 years anyway?

Because then it doesn't matter if it's INTEL or AMD.

She does NOT play trible A titles.

Intel just because its better

But it is worth the huge extra cost? It's almost double the price, and benchmarks show like 20% more performance  AT MOST.

Even a celeron would be enough for those purposes... anyway...

I was going to say A8 7600 till I saw the GPU, what about an X4 860K?

This is a signature.

mm well yes it is to be honest with you. but for her use case a core i3 or pentium would be good there not to expensive.

Intel or AMD APU(just don't get FX) also a i3 will do just fine you don't need a i5

Have you considered getting an i3? They're very capable and will usually outperform the FX-6300 while it would free up some budget for SSD compared to the i5-4460

only outperform FX in older titles, or titles that only use 4 cores. Newer games who more often support more then 4 cores, the FX will get similar FPS as the i3, but it will have better minimum FPS (in general).

I would look at what weddings, engagement rings etc cost, then buy AMD FX-6300 and maybe a cheap SSD. Cheap wow factor.

My wife(of 20 years) plays those facebook games quite well on our old x3 with a gt 520. You could get by with an FX 4 core even or an I3 or even a G3258 or Athlon 860k

I've added it to the list, how does it look? that i3 outperforms the 6300 in single threaded applications, and sims 3 is mostly 2 cores. So that's definitely better.

AMD APU.... you do not need anything else

I have a GTX 460 already. Just need to find a cheap good CPU. Think it's waste paying extra for the built-in GPU, on an APU.

Well she doesn't play any new games. Most of the games she plays are probably 2-core supported anyway. Was just worried about browsing, youtube/videos/lots of tabs, etc.

The better option is to dump the bitch and use the money to buy yourself a new rig.

Whaaaaaat? xD I won't be getting married so soon bro!

So are you saying I shouldn't go for the 6300?

Leaning towards the i3 now, cause it's power-efficient and cheap.

Also the socket 1150 can be upgraded. AM3+ is kind of dead :/

Lol my own rig doesn't really need an upgrade? xD I can play all the games I want on high/max settings haha.

Even Witcher 3, GTA V and other AAA title games.

Not even overclocked. haha. But thanks anyway.
