Panasonic's New Technics Turntables

PCBjon

This might only interested the vinyl collector of this forum and since its tech related I thought why not.

Source: http://www.digitaltrends.com/music/iconic-brand-technics-will-produce-turntables-once-again/

“Turntables are a very iconic product for the Technics brand,” said Technics director Michiko Ogawa to Wired UK. “It is important to show our sincere dedication [to that]. The turntable market is very small but it is a very important brand product.”

Technics turntables, which debuted in 1972 and were discontinued in 2010, have long been a mainstay for DJs. The SL-1200 series was its workhorse model and the one that many DJs lived by. “The way it’s built and constructed, it’s perfect as it is,” said Toronto-based DJ and DJ shop owner Jason Palma to The Toronto Star when the brand discontinued its turntable line in 2010. “It’s sturdy, it’s a tank, and it works perfectly for DJs.”

We’re not sure what the new turntable series will bring, or even if it will even offer an updated version of the SL-1200. We do know that sales of vinyl records have exploded as of late, surpassing 9 million in sales for the first time in 20 years this past year, and we’re sure Panasonic/Technics wants to capitalize on some of that growth.

My 2 cents.

Despite the image in the article only been a prototype I sure hope they don't go with the wavey metal plate on the top, Id love if they released a table it wont differ too much from the classic what I would like to see is maybe a digital speed controller that will play 33,45 and 78s in one table.

This seems odd frankly... most people who want turntables at this point have them.... or can get a used one of good quality for cheap.... buying a new one would appeal only to like the most hardcore technics collectors ... just don't see the point.

Very true. I picked up a mint condition circa 1994 for peanuts a few years ago and still works amazing.

I'd be interested in a USB one that can copy to a PC, my family has alot of old records and they pay for the digital or CD versions to get the songs onto their phones.

I run my browser through NSA ports to make their illegal jobs easier. :P
If it's not broken, take it apart and fix it.

The opposite actually: I grew up on vinyl and cassette tapes and I know they sounded like fucking shit compared to modern digital formats specially lossless audio. This has nothing to do with the actual quality of the product and everything to do with (a mostly fake) sense of nostalgia: Oh I wanna hear those scratch and pops all over the place that made subtle details and a wider dynamic range objectively and measurably worst.

I still have a turntable that predates my birth. Fully functional to this day and with quite a supply of needles just in case.

Also have (or at least I remember having) a more modern JVC that has RCA output instead of them pesky SDRs

The DJ in me is excited. I didn't see a pic of a true speed adjustable deck, but I'd assume they would have to release one, because, well, it's technics.

I have crates and crates of vinyl from my 1998-2004 San Francisco rave DJ days. :D

Than you been an adult an all and have a reasonable sense of understanding, why post in a thread which you have no interest in as I said in the opening post this will interested vinyl collectors.

There is no right and wrong to what people prefer to listen to some rather listen to digital some would listen to tape or CD its personal preference. So to you vinyl is dead but to others its still an enjoyable listening experience, so just be happy and live and let live.

We're talking about sales of new vinyl printings. Collectors collect classics that were released on vinyl back in the day originally, we're talking about reprinting albums or printing brand new, 2015 albums in vinyl runs like I see many bands do just for the sake of pretentious assholes, not collectors.

While I agree they are alot of crappy pressed albums from bands out today they are some very good stuff as well from ACDC, Jack White even the remasters of the Led Zeppelin are very impressive in terms of sound quality. Once you got a good stylus and nice clean records the sound of vinyl is excellent.

Yes, I guess that is one valid reason to consider.... however there are many manufacturers that make those now.... and usually pretty cheap.  I'm sure that Panasonic has no intent on this being a "entry level" product....Also there is considerable time involved with ripping vinyl to digital... I've done it, but only for albums that I really did not feel like buying again on CD's.

Yeah and I'm sure 2015 technology would also allow us to build infinitely more efficient steam engines, yet why would you do that when new, better, cleaner engines exist already? There's always gonna be a stupid needle noise and it's always gonna be a destructive, feeble format that has to delicately be manipulated, often turned around or come in 2 or 3 discs, has 0 portability and overall makes no sense at all from any sort of practical standpoint.

They should sell a nice, LP sized looking poster with a code on it to redeem a lossless digital download of the actual music if you care so much about nostalgia and the physical experience and so on.

Vinyl was never made for portability. And as I said above its personally preference try not to loose sleep over it .

These are made for DJs and let me tell you, you can't get a good pair of turntables cheaply. And before you ask DJs still use vinyl because the emulated scratching on software and cdjs suck compared to vinyl.
