An autonomous starfish-killing robot is close to being ready for trials on the Great Barrier Reef. Crown-of-thorns starfish have have been described as a significant threat to coral.

The Cotsbot robot, which has a vision system, is designed to seek out starfish and give them a lethal injection. After it eradicates the bulk of starfish in a given area, human divers can move in and mop up the survivors.
Field trials of the robot have begun in Moreton Bay in Brisbane to refine its navigation system

Why would the military want to kill starfish?

That is an oddly specific use for a murder-bot. "Wanna take over the world? Nah, lets just euthanize some starfish."

Is it our fault in some way that they are invading the reef?

If not, I think we should let nature run its course. We always seem to meddle with everything :/.

...............Why are we killing one part of the eco-system to protect the rest of it? Eventually the star fish will be overly successful, and then they will starve because there's no more food, die, and the ecosystem will come back.

I mean Autonomous human-killing robot

I'd prefer it if they genetically modified dolphins, to make killer soldier dolphins.

Edit: also I was just kidding

I am not sure if the starfish overpopulation is directly "our" fault, but possibly indirectly through invading their natural territory or giving them a reason to reproduce more thanks to overfishing of their natural enemies? I am your opinion, that we should let nature take it's own run, but do not forget, that thanks to "us" the Great Barrier reef and other coral reafs are getting smaller, so I guess "we" use the starfish to find an excuse to minimize "our" effects on the reefs?

I used quotations, because You and me more or less contribute to this cause, but it's more meant as humanity alltogether.

Global warming accelerated the population growth of starfish and the decline of reef

Increased ocean acidification means that its harder for calcium carbonate to form in the ocean. this means that shellfish and coral are having a hard time now. we need to protect what coral we have now or we wont have any in the future.
