Internet bandwidth gradually slowing down during tasks.

Raiden60

I'm using a 300Mbps 802.11n PCIe x1 network adapter and using BT Home Hub 5. My internet usually runs at 35-45Mbps download speed max(btw, is this slow to start off with?) and then drops to 5-10Mbps download speed after about an hour or so. What could cause this gradual decrease? And it is gradual, I checked. It only goes back up if I stop the download and leave it for a while(10-15mins). The router is one floor below me, pretty much directly below me, let's say 1/2-1ft thickness of wall and 6ft total distance.

can you do me a favour buddy? login to your router (192.168.1.254) then go to the troubleshooting  section, then helpdesk. Login with the admin password (on the back of  the router) and copy and paste the page for me, i wanna know what youre connected at, because if you get 45 Mbps, you will be paying for 76 Mbps and its pointless being on that package for 5Mbps more, you may aswell be on the 40/10 package.

ps- the hh5 is a shit router and it always knocks my 5ghz speeds down until i reboot.

i see youre using a modem :P i cant actually see your connection speed unless you just plug the homehub 5 in by itself, instead (sorry for the mess about) do a speedtest for me and show me the results, il be able to tell by your upload speed.

you are on the 40/10 package and by modem i mean do you have the white openreach modem along side the homehub? its says ppp connected in the helpdesk usually meaning the homehub is connected to one of these.

no worries man :P, good job you have a modem as them home hub 5s are notorious for dropping connection with no real cause other than theyre bugged, speed wise your connection is pretty good.

now onto the decrease, for some reason that i dont know of, bt is very poor for trafficking, meaning if you download even if you have a good internet speed its not shared out equally and can drop off very quick, i have 80/20 with them and as soon as anyone downloads it hogs like 80% of the internet and it sucks.

are you  only seeing a speed decrease when downloading or in general? if its in general then it could be the hub, but what you want to do when it starts degrading is do a traceroute to bbc.co.uk, if the ping is high within the first 7 hops, it could be an isp issue.

I've only really noticed during constant downloads, but that's not only when it happens. Sometimes internet just glitches out and some webpages and YouTube videos take a bit longer to load, but in games, I haven't noticed anything. I'll try that traceroute thing when I notice it again, and I'll also try to be more adamant on my reply times :P

Take your time man :P no need to rush replies (sometimes I forget completely but don't tell anyone) webpages taking ages are usually DNS servers being slow and the only thing you can do is change DNS settings but then theres always the risk that them DNS servers could go a bit tits up too.
