Worlds first 4K Blu-Ray Player and studios promise to release all its contents in 4K blu-ray

Samsung player is capable of providing four times the resolution and 64 times higher color expression compared to standard Blu-ray and can upscale content to provide UHD resolution for any disc. UHD streaming services are also available through the box. The sharp picture format, also called 4K, is the next optical disc format that will succeed Blu-ray. The format's first players and discs are expected to go on sale by the end of 2015, but none had been officially announced before.  Netflix, Amazon and others support 4K streaming over the Internet, but the quality of streamed movies likely won't be as high as that of an Ultra HD Blu-ray. Ultra HD Blu-ray improves upon the original Blu-ray format. It allows the discs to have more storage -- up to 100GB versus Blu-Ray's 50GB

They will have original content. true many are 1080p but they have better color space than what was available in recent TV's... the movies comes with HDR.. meaning even 1080p upscaled contents will be more vivid.

Again I refuse to support this format: It shouldn't had been needed if ISPs and the entertainment industry (often one and the same) wouldn't intentionally hold back internet speeds and digital distribution. They got millions in tax breaks to increase their infrastructure yet they're still fighting off proper digital distribution since most people would otherwise have access to 4k Netflix and such if it wasn't for the fact that well, fuck progress we rather keep overcharging for outdated copper based service.

Then I will never buy a movie then. (I watch most of the movies I see in theaters, and very rarely rent them.) I don't want to buy a movie locked to a platform. if I buy it I want to be able to use it on any device.

If you buy a movie on google play, can you not watch it on any device? Works on any pc (linux, mac, windows), your mobile devices. I'm also pretty sure you can watch it on consoles too.

God, even if I pay for an "unlimited download" plan from my ISP (+10€/month), then I'll have to buy high capacity SSDs (or even pci-e SSDs, coz yeah, HDD will piss me off, taking hours to copy uhd bluerays).

Let's say I get 100 uhd bluray movies, that would prolly require in between 2teras (20gigs/movies) and 10teras (100 gigs/movie). Aka in Europe, between 1 to 5 samsung sata SSD of 2 teras, thus from 800€ up to 4000€ ...

And that would still be cheaper and more convenient than buying the proper UHD bluerays in shops, because the price per movie would be in between 8 and 40€ each in SSD stockage.

TL;DR : We'll prolly have to buy dozens of NASes just to full them off many cheap/low capacity SSDs, only to keep an average hoarder collection.
Heck, maybe it'd be cheaper to purchase several E-ATX 2011v3 motherboards, just for getting the most PCI-E/m.2 +  sata ports per machine...
All that is an evil manipulation from the computer industry just to sell us more machine in the next years!

as far as I know you can't. I don't want to have to rely on google play to be able to watch my videos.

Fox said their entire collection.. They support HDR and wide color gamut and higher resolution. "mastered in 4k" BluRays is just downscaled from original 4K digital footage.

If you buy movies on itunes I don't think you're required to have itunes. Don't quote me on it, but pretty sure you can buy a movie on itunes, and then just extract the file from itunes folder.

Google play is pretty great as far as platform support. I generally just rent movies on there.

You're ignoring the fact that streaming in 4K, today (through Netflix or limited YouTube content) simply requires high, high speed connections to begin with. we're talking 30 at minimum if not more to prevent clogging your own network when someone is streaming 4K. It is a lot of data. 

 

Blu Ray has its place especially in media consumption. Not everyone is going to be satisfied with a shitty stream from Netflix with a quarter of the bitrate of a Blu Ray with lossy sound mixes. Some people want to enjoy 4K in all its glory in a lossless form with proper audio. Like me. I have little issue paying for a 4K projector (already have one) or a 4K Blu Ray player (still need one) or 4K content. 

 

I don't want to ravage my own internet just for passable 4K. I want the real deal and I (and many others) will spend for it. 4K, more than 1080p ever could be, is closer to the home theatre experience at home. Movies these days are natively filmed at 4K digital and shown in that format, Dolby and their ATMOS is available for home consumption. Yes, streaming is a nice feature but until you can stream a 4K movie at lossless quality, people like me won't care. And I will never care because I know damn well that asking for that kind of bandwidth and throughput from an ISP, in todays market, is never going to happen.

I did not ignore that: I very specifically said that ISPs are intentionally limiting connection speeds: They've got huge tax breaks as part of the 1996 telecommunications act and they were supposed to invest on upgrading their networks with that meaning that 20 years later most homes would have had fiber have their kept their end of the bargain and not just flatout pocketed the money and not done a single fucking thing to upgrade their infrastructure.

20 gigs is a VERY optimistic number. Most of my regular Blu-ray rips are around 20 gigs already, with several exceeding 30 gigs.
