Conclusions:

The AMD Side

AMD Athlon X4 860K - AMD Athlon X4 860K had the top Cost to Performance Ratio in all games particularly with AMD Radeon R9 280 (Sapphire Dual-X).  You could up to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 (OEM) and be sufficient in most games in Cost to Performance Ratio. However, anything higher than that should be paired with a high end CPU.

AMD FX 8350 – This processor was almost always out classed by the Intel Core i5-4440 expect in a few games.

AMD FX 9590 (AIO)- This generally performed just as good with the AMD FX 8350 but just cost more.

The Intel Side

Intel Core i3-4130 – Although the Intel Core i3-4130 was always beat by the AMD Athlon X4 860K it was never beat by any large margin. Therefore the

Intel Core i3-4130 is a sufficient option for in place for the AMD Athlon X4 860K.

Intel Core i5-4440 – The Intel Core i5-4440 had the best Cost to Performance Ratio for the AMD Radeon R9 290X (MSI Lightning) and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 (ASUS STRIX) as well as being sufficient for the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 (OEM).

Intel Core i7-4790K – The Intel Core i7-4790K turned out to be outclassed by Intel Core i5-4440 because at best the Intel Core i7-4790K got 10 more frame rates compared to the Intel Core i5-4440 for $150 more.

Great write up, lots of details...

Pity you didn't include the super important MIN-FPS details, but hey, can't have everything....

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Its the same for my Xeon X5450. A $50 CPU and it nearly manages to beat my i5 4440 when I crank up the voltage and overclock.

Edit: Intel still beats AMD when it comes to performance/dollar or performance/watt. CMT was one long line of major fuckups.

i would add the word "relative" to the tittle.

Because its only a handful of games, and you'll find lots of variation going from lets say a free to play mmo to battlefield 4 or crysis 3.

So it would be like " Amd vs Intel relative cost per frame in games, lots of data"

I figured the 860K was the best performance/cost ratio.

But it kinda surprised me that it beat the i3 in everything.

Yea the 860k is quite a good chip, I want to check out FM2+ so might be a perfect chip to do so.

And yet nothing can run Star Citizen Alpha at a constant 60FPS [emoji14]

Personally would of liked to see the 6300 vs the 860k as they are close to price and to see what difference the extra 2 cores made.

FX-6300 would probably win in nicely multithreaded games while the 860K would kick its ass in more poorly threaded games.

@

generally great post. BUT

you do not always use the same GPU... meaning the cost of the system is then imbalanced... Sure not all CPUs can reach a certain FPS with that specific GPU. But in those cases, they should be left out, due to not making it..

It simply makes no sense, like one of them when you added a 980 to a 860k.... WHY? that GPU cost like nearly twice that of the other GPUs used in the test.. Of course the price to performance would be worse.... Either use the same GPU, everywhere. or use 2-3 GPUs..

High 980

mid 280x

low 750Ti

cut out the crap with some 260Xs, 280s, some 770s, some 290Xs.... it just causes imbalanced charts that are not representative of actual cost to performance.

I do not care if intel or AMD or Nvidia gives you the best result. but these results arent even GOOD. they are all over the place and not representative, nor comparable.

the point of a test is consistency, consistency, consistency and the ability to replicate the results by another party....

this test as a whole is bullshit. it has too many variables, from games to GPU brand to CPU brand and how you mix those three.... it proves or disproves nothing. It is but a mere pointer...

Gaming:

860K > FX-4300

FX-4300 > Pentium

FX-6300 > i3

FX-8320 < i5

FX-9370 < i7

860K = FX-4300

FX-4300 > Pentium

FX-6300 = i3

FX-9590 < i5

Also, about this topic...it's just plain wrong on so many levels...you don't buy into a platform for gaming thinking FPS per dollar and forget about everything that must surround it (ex. motherboards/overclocking ready hardware/aftermarket CPU cooling etc. as mentionned already, cost of the CPU alone won't mean much quite often) and more often than not when it comes to gaming the CPU will have the most impact on SMOOTNESS OF ANIMATION and STUTTER FREE animation and not necesseraly on FPS...average FPS on top of that...those only highlight a very small fraction of what's going on...what about minimum FPS? average frametime variance? 99th percentile latency etc.

You really could argue about those Pentiums tho

You really could argue about those Pentiums tho

you would have to average a ton of games, old and new, all type of games to declare a winner...the pentium play MMO, RTS, RPG's MUCH better but will fall to his knees on more modern titles that require more threads and just more computing overall...so there are games in which they shine and games in which they suck for both...so i call them equal...they suck equaly.

i'm more of the modern demanding game style, i play battlefields, crysis type shooters, GTA etc. so for me personaly i would pick an AMD quad-core over a pentium any day of the week and i'd be more happy with it...if you play mostly RTS and steam games and shit get the pentium you'll like it.

yeah, but good luck playing some of the MMORPG's or RTS games on the 860K...or ARMA 3 or other single-threaded CPU heavy stuff...you're in for a 30FPS struggle.

At any rate it's always better to save a little more and buy a core i3 for example which can play ANY game at a very acceptable rate, old or new, modern game engine or not, MMO or not.

I dunno the 860K can play War Thunder just fine and I seen people play Planetside 2 on it... (Arma 3 will be hell lol)
