EVGA 980ti Hybrid very loud at idle.

Totallycasual
Go to solution Solved by 0ld_Chicken,

That Noctua fan looks pretty nice, if its quiet when plugged into the GPU at 100% then i'd be more inclined to take that path. May i ask is it the exact same dimensions as the stock one?

it should also be the exact same size since it does not come with the rubbber mounts that some noctua do that add 1-3mm.   both the p12 and the stock fan are 120mm x 120mm x 25mm

Picked up my new card yesterday and i love the performance but wow its so loud at idle, the fan on the radiator seems to just be going at 100% no matter what im doing.

Like right now its at 100% but the GPU temp is sitting on 19 degrees Celsius, i thought these cards were supposed to be near silent at idle >.<

download a program like msi afterburner and you can manually control the fan speed

check for any bios updates from the manufacturer, if its a glitch where it runs at 100% all the time it might be fixed already with a new bios :P

unfortunately in order to control that fan you will have to disconnect it from the card's fan connector and connect to either a fan controller or your motherboard.  this disappointed me as well when I got this a couple weeks ago.  you can also just put a more silent fan like a nf-p12 and it still gets great temps just a few degrees c higher than the stock fan

edit: afterburner will control the blower fan on the card but nothing will change the radiator fan speed as it is tied directly to the 12v and ground in the connector

Well that's sad news :(

right!!  I use a venturi connected to my motherboard but for a while I had a nf-p12 connected to the card and it was fine.  I dont get why they used such a high rpm fan and didn't provide a way to control it other than the disconnect, it could be much quieter/weaker and still have amazing performance.  I'm actually going to sell mine and go custom loop

Exactly >.< i think maybe if i removed the fan and put the radiator on one of the existing case fans it would still be more than fine.

what case fan is it?  im tryin mine under load at 1200rpm now but it is still a static pressure fan

Just one of the stock fans that came with my 250D.

its worth a shot but it may not be enough.  my venturi at 1200rpm does about 55c instead of 46c and that is with a 980 (non-ti), best bet would probably be a cheap replacement fan or connecting the stock fan to the motherboard with a 3 pin extension if you've got the headers to spare

Would anyone be able to recommend a good quality/quiet fan for me to purchase that's exactly the same size as the one that comes stock on the radiator? I have a 250D so space is tight and the current one only just fits.

are you going to be plugging it straight into the graphics card connection? if so make sure to get only a 3 pin fan

I'm really not very good at this type of thing (not super savvy), i guess if i plug another fan into the GPU its going to run at 100% again because i have no way to control it. I guess i'll plug it into the motherboard with an extension then?

yes it will run at 100% also.  I like my pc to be really quiet (especially at idle) and I did not really mind the noise level of the NF-p12 at 100%

OR

if you are able to control the fans connected to your motherboard then you could get a 3 pin extension cable for 2$ shipped and plug the stock radiator fan into the motherboard and turn it down to about 50% on idle and probably 90% at full load.

It is leagues quieter than the stock fan at 100%.  It does not move quite as much air but I found it to be plenty for my heavily overclocked/overvolted 980

it should also be the exact same size since it does not come with the rubbber mounts that some noctua do that add 1-3mm.   both the p12 and the stock fan are 120mm x 120mm x 25mm

Did you try using EVGA Precision or MSI afterburner? i use MSI to control my GPU fan speed and it works perfect i have it settup for 80% under load when gaming and idle to 10%.
