Is 1GB at 1080p still enough?

Mikjul

I have a 1GB 6870 and i seem to be pushing games nicely at 1080p though i can't enable everything i would want to.

Is the saying "1GB is not enough" just people who want 4xMSAA+ ?

Playing through Far Cry 3 on almost max settings sans AA and Post FX... runs great except when i record the damn game it seems to drop the GPU usage a lot making FPS lower.

Oh and my CPU is an intel i5 750 at 3.7ghz.

I play on 1080p and 1GB is not enough for me as I sometimes go up to 1.3GB playing Battlefield 3. and that is with no msaa.

Strange, i play that game with high settings and post AA medium.. 50-70FPS at 1080p with no ambient occlusion.

1GB is for 768p nowadays - for 1080p you WANT 2GB since a lot of games will use 1.3-1.9 GB of VRAM - Witcher 3 being a prime example - it runs on 1 GB but you will need lower settings and some things are not rendered I believe.

Your old GPU (as in the processor on the card, not the card itself) is a bigger concern than the VRAM size. That chip is only about as fast as a modern GTX 750. It's going to be in pretty dire straits if you tried to play The Witcher 3 or some other recent, highly-demanding game. Far Cry 3 is going on three years old now, I played that just fine with my old GTX 460.

Memory is kind of a peripheral concern, as any modern GPU is going to start at 2 GB. That's still enough for basically any game at 1080p. 3–4 GB would allow you to turn the settings up a bit higher in a few games.

for 768p - 1 GB is min, you want 2GB

for 1080p - 2GB is min, you want 4GB

for 1440p - 4GB is min, you want 6GB

for 4K - 6GB is min, you want more than that.

Funnily enough - I tried VSR 1440p max settings in Witcher 3 - 2.4GB of VRAM. Fun times - it actually ate my 8GB of RAM first xD

Witcher 3 FTW :D - but that just shows a game can look good and not hog resources.

1 GB for modern games at good settings at 1080p is not enough. Some games yes, but I would get the upgrade. At least 2 GB for 1080p

Essentially this - some games will be fine @ medium 1080p but others will have issues - some games mitigate this by not rendering everything I believe - Witcher I've seen run fine on 1GB cards using 900Mb of memory and on 2 GB cards using 1.4 GB of memory @ the same settings and resolution - my best guess is the game was built around the idea that someone might try to force 1 GB on it and thus reduces the foliage and characters loaded and rendered - but that's just a theory, a hardware theory :P
