A question of processors and motherboards (Intel)

Hey. I've been in the PC scene since 2012, my PC is doing great except for one thing. The CPU. AMD just isn't cutting it, I've used a couple of their processors and they just sucked, the temperature is high and the performance is not as I expected.

 

Anyway, the actual question, I wanted to get an intel processor, I have a mid range graphics card for mid range gameplay, the NVIDIA GTX 760 with 2GB of VRAM. Which intel processor should I get? I don't know very much about intel or processors for that matter. Right now I have an AMD X4 Athlon 760K Quad Core clocked at 4.1GHz.

 

I am planning to get a MSI GTX 960 with 4GB of VRAM.

i5 4460 if you're not into overclocking, i5 4690k if you're into overclocking.

 

if you're on a budget, an i3 will be fine.

What processor you should get shouldn't be determined by your current parts, it should be determined by your budget.

i5 4460 no overclock, 4690k with overclocking and Z97

and get a 380 ffs

for that gpu an i3 with a h81 mobo should be enough. p.s., I think a 280x would be better but its your choice

He beat me to exactly what I was going to say.  I noticed you said you were going to get a 960 with 4GB and for that price range I would recommend a r9 280(x) or a r9 380.  AMD's graphics card (at least for mid range) are doing muuuch better than their CPUs right now.

yes, it's i5-4460 though...pair it with a cheap H97 motherboard and youre good to go.

Your GPU choice though...the GTX 960 4gb is barely any faster than the 760 you already have in your build...i strongly suggest at least an upgrade to an R9 290/290X/390/390X or GTX 970/980 (780/780ti can be good too if you can catch a deal or a used one or something)...or just stay where you at...you'll get better performance with a new CPU, then if you think you need more upgrade to one of these GPU's...the 960 is a sidegrade (well, it's an upgrade, but not a worthy one)

I agree with @i_build_nanosuits, getting a 960 or a 380 to replace a 760 would be pointless. Instead of spending $200 on a 960 you could put that money towards an unlocked i7-6700k and a Z170 board, though make sure you get a DDR3 board (for example, Asus Z170P-D3) unless you're willing to upgrade your RAM to DDR4. Or you could just save the money and get a locked Skylake i5/i7 and H170 board supporting DDR3 when they launch soon. The minimal upgrade on GPU that would make any sense would be R9 290, R9 290x, GTX 970, or R9 390.

I was actually thinking of getting a GTX 970 from MSI. The TwinFrozr V is really good because my only gripe with the 760 is that it is very loud.

1. Dont get 4GB 960 if you wanna go 4GB route get a R9 380!

 

2. The i5 is the best candidate for most games but FX-6300 or higher works to at the cost of a better motherboard is needed...

The MSI Gaming is supposed to be one of the best 970s on the market.

it has to be an awesome card i have the previous version of the twinfrozr cooler on my card and the 780 consume more power thus output more heat and the fans on my card arent even as fancy and the cooler itself is smaller and STILL the card is the quietest i have owned in YEARS of powerful GPU's...AMD, nvidia i owned many gen cards but this, this is something nice i would buy another MSI gaming card in a heartbeat in fact my next GPU will be MSI that's for sure.

Don't get a MSI video card....junk.

Get EVGA, ASUS or gigabyte.
