Need help with BT Business Fibre (UK)

ThePkSloth

Hi there, i recently moved into a new flat above a shop. As it shares a phoneline with the business downstairs i was able to arrange to use that phoneline for internet while they used it just for a phone, which is why i have "business" internet.

It was connected on the 18th of August and BT says they could be performing tests for up to ten days so intermittent connections could be possible. During this time the internet was disconnected at least 5 times daily. The connection remained up for over two days after this and i believed the connection issues were gone. However, today the problems returned with 5-6 disconnects in 8 hours.

I am using the BT home hub 5 which was given to me and every time it disconnects the main light turns orange and the broadband ( B) symbol will also turn orange for a short period before the router reconnects and turns blue again. I have researched this issue and there seems to be no definitive answer as to the cause, many people blame the home hub 5 for the issues.

Below is a log of events from the router from a few days ago. This line (PPP LCP Send Termination Request [user request]) appears every time i have looked at the log, i'm not quite sure what it means but if i had to guess it is the router telling itself to reset?

Does anyone know what is going on here and how i can fix it?

Should i just replace the router? And if so what are the best cheap options for a router?

Thank you all for your time

Right; First hint..

My Homehub 5 is still in the box; I didnt even bother with it.

Go and get a proper router or build your own from an old PC...

Also do you have one of the white openreach modems?

It's the router, you need to buy an openreach modem to stop the drop outs, I've had 3 Homehub 5s with this issue.

The modem will connect to the Internet and the hub will just give the wireless.

Aye but the Homehub 5 is really only any good for throwing in a skip or reselling for £50 on Fleabay...

Or a giant oversized paperweight...

Yup... It's much more stable than any inbuilt modem...

Yes you would because a router requires a modem unless it's a modem/router combo, you could plug a router Into the hh5 but you would still get drop outs.

Wouldn't pay £10 for the shit it is, what's point providing an ac router when one minute it's giving you 75 down the next 45 down, they're so unreliable.

Sky broadband is just godawful.

And well you get what you pay for, BT broadband is really expensive (and worth it). Sky was a slow, laggy mess compared to BT and even BE (ADSL2+, we got moved to Sky and it wasnt a nice experience).

Getting anything done was like sitting on a cactus

sky adsl2+ meh, sky fibre solid, my mums on sky fibre 40/10 and so is my dad, its always solid and always reliable, good speeds, good latency.

at my girlfriends on bt infinity it took 5 engineers to sort the connection, we were only getting 57 of the 64 min quoted, now getting the full 80/20 gladly and because the contract ended i rang retention and now get the 80/20 for a cheap £21.20 a month, how good is that.

i hate bt because theyre always upping their prices, last year this time line rental was £15.99 and now its £18.99, like wtaf.

id have gone to virgin media but didnt wanna have to wait 2 weeks.

Virgins capping is the thing that lost them a sale. The fact that if I use 5gb in an hour on a 150mb connection i get throttled and if I keep using 5gb/hr i end up at adsl 2 speeds. I mean WTF...

they dont cap you on 152 package, my friends dad doesnt get capped anyway, he downloads all the time at around 20 MB/s from something called binsearch.

IIRC They had a "shaping" policy, they may have refined it but given I routinely break 1tb/month (yay unreal engine + my game source code) , it would be kinda annoying to be capped.

virgin have the best download speeds in the uk by far for consumer broadband but their uploads are shit and the latency is all over the place, they used to be good for latency but now all i see is people complaining, there cable  is much better than bts, skys etc so dno why this is a problem.

me too but my line only supports a max of 23Mbps as seen in my unlocked hg612.

hopefully vectoring will boost it, G.inp has already been released for huawei cabinets and my line has seen such an improvement because of it, my latency is better and it never ever increases due to interleave anymore because interleave has been removed, my error count is now none, before i could get over 20k CRC errors in one day causing my line to resync at a lower speed.
