4k or 1440p?

Ok, so im buying a beast setup with a GTX 980 Ti and a 6700k. Im gonna use it for gaming and a little bit of animating but not enough to make me go with the 5820k . The question is should i go with the :

ASUS 27" ROG SWIFT PG278Q(1440p, TN, 144hz, Gsync, 1ms)

or the

ACER 28" PREDATOR XB280HK(4k, TN, 60hz, Gsync, 1ms).

Ok so the things im worried about is that with the 4k monitor my FPS in Witcher 3, Battlefield Hardline at ultra will not be 60fps, but 4k is such a nice resolution and will improve my experience the monitor is also a little bit cheaper.

Ok so the ROG SWIFT is an amazing 1440p with amazing refresh rate to fit my more competetive games such as CSGO and at 1440p my GTX 980 Ti should handle it.

So i have a hard time choosing any suggestions?

  The reason im not going with a IPS monitor is because of the price and the response time as im gonna be playing CSGO and alot of other competetive games.

1080p more then enough, 4k only eats fps and 1440p... in this case just go with 1440p unless u like to browse porn in 4k

4k benchmarks are almost always on the highest settings the 980ti can actually push 60 FPS on most games if you scale down on detail a bit, because of the much greater pixel density and resolution you won't notice much of an impact in visual quality if any at all.

1440p. Good Performance good Resolution. 4k is by far too demanding.

4K is more so for casual, productivity or multitasking.

1440p is the sweet spot right now.

1440P IPS...

Dont get TN panels the colours are crappy.

I have seen a couple 144Hz IPS ones if you really need the 144Hz (competitive play)

Both Asus and Acer has a few new monitors hititng the marked before the end of the year, so it might be worth it to wait.

Also, 4k if you are fine with not everything maxed out, 1440p if you want to max everything out. Same for 60Hz vs 144Hz.

I speak my mind, sorry if thats a problem.

144hz - id say that pretty much is a no brainer... even for desktop use; its just WAY MORE COMFORTABLE

However, you can forget the ROG SWIFT and its garbage TN screen. Now - for the same price - you can get an IPS screen with the same specs = acer xb270hu. That will be a vastly better quality screen.

(And people who quote response time should get informed what it actually is and stop being so susceptible to marketing ... its just bullshit to keep peddling TN garbage to you.)

Right now the Acer XB270HU would be your best bet IMO. Also while the PG278Q is a shoddy TN Asus is coming out with the new IPS Swift - the PG279Q soonish. I'm gonna take a look at that before refreshing my monitor.

1080p is starting to be an old/standard resolution for gaming. Theres a big difference compared to 1440p whch you easily notice.

I wouldnt recommend a 1080p monitor to anyone who isnt on a strict budget anymore

98% of all ppl on steam use 1080p monitors, and perhaps of all gamers aswell,  why u shouldnt recommend 1440p or 4k, because ul get low fps and need to reduce settings to maintain proper performance ( unless u got like 980ti slis ect )  for budget builds ESPECIALLY, stick with 1080p never go higher then 1080p on a strict budget...

The fps difference isnt that big for 1440p from 1080p. My 680 lost around 10-20% fps in average in games when i tested both.

Just because the majority of the people use them, doesnt mean that these numbers wont start changing soon

10-20% is insane much btw, if ul lose 10-20% average, one explosion and boom gone fps :P

yeah but thats on an old card with 2gb vram

lol its not about the vram its about the gpu's processing power :P ul get the same drops on a higher end gpu reso will drop fps wether u have enough vram or not, when u do run out of vram ur fps will reduce DRAMATICALLY and not just 10-20% more like 90%...   10-20% drop in fps is due to the gpu needing to render more pixels... if it were vram u would drop 90% fps easily :P

modern games these days are already extreme demanding on max settings @ 1080p, let stand going 1440p/4k on singlegpu ( sure 1440p is possible with a 980ti oc... but not recommended if u like to keep ur fps 60+ )

Well you should loose about % fps.

1080p = 1920*1080 = 2,073,600 Pixels

1440p = 2560*1440 = 3,686,400 Pixels

And 4K for Reference (*Yes I am aware this is technically not true 4K but anyway)

2160p* = 3840*2160 = 8,294,400

A 1440p is still a decent chunk (77%) more pixels than a 1080p display, so ofc it will tank the performance a bit.

I have an Asus Strix GTX970 with a 1080p display, but I plan on upgrading to a 1440p display. Is the 970 good enough to sustain good fps? I only play RTS (Age of Empires II), and Mitosis. Thanks :).
