What CPU should I get?

pb4000

So I've got the R9 270x and 6gb of ram but which CPU should I get? My absolute limit is $200, but I'd go lower than that. I've had a few CPUs recommended to me, but I wasnt totally sure...

All I'm gonna be doing is gaming and music mixing.

i5 4460 best price-performace CPU in that range.

Wrong. the 4590 is better and is only $10 more.

Skylake, that's interesting...I might wait for them to release some more...even if they're all out of my price range, the older CPUs might go down in price a bit...

Overclocking? I'd rather not deal with that can of worms.

Yes, I know I need 2gb more. I just got the 6gb for free, so why not? I'll upgrade later. It should be good for now.

Well well well, argument time? ;)

They won't go down too much any time soon. But I'd wait to see what gets announced.

Actually, the 4460 has better price/performance read the comments before you make a comment, also he needs 2GB more memory, so the 4460 would be a better bet in his situation, he also said that he would rather have it be cheaper, and in his case the 4590 isnt worth the extra 10$.

That sounds good to me. However, its sounding like either the 4460 or the 4590 will prevail as winner. How about the amd side of things? Or should we just not even go there?

$10 isn't going to get him more memory. And $10 is hardly cheaper. It'd be pointless to get something less powerful for so little less.

Since it sounds like you're going to be gaming I would't even consider AMD.

or an extra 300mhz boost on your CPU...i'm with @Opeth747 on this...the 4590 is well worth the extra 10$ if those are the real prices for you that you are looking at...in your shoes i'd be willing to pay up to 15$ extra for the i5-4590. it's base clock is only 100mhz faster than the 4460...but look at the boost, many boards now allow to lock the boost clock across all CPU cores on top of that...so boost clock is the most important and in that regard it's 300mhz faster, which is something to consider when buying a locked CPU.

40$ bucks is going to get him ram, instead of 30$ bucks.

AMD right now would be like buying ivy bridge, they are waaay behind, haven't made a new architecture in 5 years. Zen may be different, we just don't know. If you wanna wait for skylake it should be said that your ram MAY have to be replaced, i haven't seen a single desktop mobo implementation of skylake of DDR3, so it may be more expensive. Also if you're doing music mixing, depending on the level of sofistication, maybe consider a mobo with good onboard audio. If you need more than onboard audio...ask another person, i would be bullshitting you if i pretended i knew :P

The thing is that there is no noticeable difference in performance, yes it's just $10 more, but it isn't like the difference in performance is noticeable.
