H440 fan setup - Static Pressure VS Airflow

Bob Jim

So I am likely going to be building in the H440 soon. My plan was to have a 140mm exhaust at the back, using a Corsair AF fan (not the best but looks ;P), and 3 120mm/2 140mm intakes at the front. Seeing as they are not visible, I don't care about looks. Two questions: Would it be better to have high static pressure or high airflow fans, due to the limited front intake, and would it be better to have 3 x 120mm or 2 x 140mm fans.

I would go for airflow fans. Static pressure are better when you are working with a radiator, but airflow are better when you are just trying to shift large quantities of air. I have the same case, with the same set up and it works fine. I think the difference would be minimal anyway. As for number of fans- fewer, bigger fans will be quieter, but again the difference wouldn't be much. I have three, and there isn' any issues.

A decent amount of static pressure for the front fans would be optimal.

2x140mm's would perform a bit worse than 120mm's but should be quieter. Less fans should either be cheaper or allow for better fans at the same cost.

An AF140 QE for rear exhaust isn't bad at all. If you're referring to PE's, they're not worth getting and the LED version isn't as good.

If you would like some specific recommendations, it would help to mention where you're shopping/located, and budget.

Thanks for the reply. So I will go with this for my 140mm exhaust, and maybe 3 of these for intakes? Or do you have any other suggestions/should I go with Corsair's quiet edition or high performance edition?

I'm doing that exact same case fan setup in my new H440 build, just with Corsair red LED fans. I believe Corsair's fans are very good nvm they're not that good(read around more) and you can't really go wrong with them and in the end real world cooling performance won't really be affected too much by whether you have SP or AF fans at intake/exhaust. It matters more in radiators and thick HDD cages for example. Though I did feel more comfortable with putting SP fans at the intake since the H440 has a fairly restrictive intake.

Corsair PE's aren't worth getting due to the noise. QE's perform decently at a more bearable noise level.

Unless you need Corsair fans for the looks, there are usually better alternatives for a similar or lower price.

Corsair fans are good at best. There are plenty of fans that are better unless you need a certain aesthetic.

I would have gone with 3 SIlentwings 2 120 at the front, but static pressur :/

SW2's have an alright amount of static pressure and are hard to go wrong with.

I am looking for h100i GTX fan replacement + 3x 140 mm for a Design S (Two intake, one Rear Exhaust) (H100i front position)

It's in slovak but names remain clear, 17 Euro per fan max.

Currently I have chosen 2* SP120s and 3* AF140 Corsairs  because they look sexy as fuck

If it's just for looks, Corsair QE's can be great options.

Otherwise, TB Silences or NF-F12's would be better for the h100i GTX

Thanks for the suggestions am I correct to assume that Fan Expert 2 (on Asus H87M-E ) with a phobya pwm splitter could drive and adjust the PWM of a 2xNF-F12 and 3xNF-P14 setup?

Alternatively:

PWM splitter for SP120s and PHobya splitter for the AF 140s. (As the mobo has 3 Fan headers only)

EDIT:

H100i GTX will perform better at the front of the case:

with Corsair Sp120 in pull (for sexy looks)

Or with Noctuas in push setup?

The motherboard should be able to control the fans just fine especially if you split the cpu_fan header. It's the most reliable when it comes to pwm control due to Intel making sure it is to spec.

Corsair fans don't look that nice without their rings in view. Putting SP120's in pull won't look as nice. If you're up for it, NF-F12's in push would be better.

Aren't NF-P12's better for push? they cost the same as NF-F12s alhough have lower RPM.

NF-P12's are quieter but have less static pressure than NF-F12's. It doesn't have anything to do with push or pull.

my bad I thought P was for Pressure Optimized.

I guess I will just for the Corsairs for the sexyness, because I can put the blue rings on them + the blue stuff on H100i if that comes with it and it will go nice with the rest of my stuff.

The P is for pressure. The NF-F12 is a bit of an update in a way though with more static pressure-- F being focus flow.
