overheating with stock cooler?

Stija

I recently noticed that my Intel Core i5 4690k (which is NOT overclocked) has been overheating recently. As I type this, HWMonitor is saying that my CPU is anywhere from 40 C to 50C. And that is about the same when my system is completely at idle, maybe going down into the high 30's. Also, when I launch Far Cry 3 and play for about 5 minutes, the temps jump all the way up 90C to 95C. I am using the Intel stock cooler (though I am planning to upgrade to a decent air cooler for Christmas, like the Dark Rock 3), and I checked to see if the stock cooler was loose, but it didn't budge and is rock solid in the motherboard. So does anyone know what might be wrong?

I am having this issue with my new rig, Idle temperatures are around 50 - 54C, when i crank it up with AC Unity my temperatures go up to 80 - 84 C. My case has 2 extra fans but the problem is where i live the average temperature during the summer is 35-40 degrees. I made sure that the cooler is installed correctly and i removed the paste and applied the new one. The results are the same.

I am getting CM Hyper 212 Evo and I hope that solves the problem.

If you want i can update the temps when i install the cooler.

80-84c is fine for load temps.

Stock thermal solutions are generally bad, specially on high(er) end CPUs and definitely under high load. Aftermarket is the way to go. hell, even Intel knows this and they stopped bundling them with their CPUs for the current gen

Huh, temperatures are ok !? :o

I had no idea, I was really afraid that it might damage the CPU.

Anyway I really think that I need the CM cooler. Hopefully sometime today I'll install it and give you an update.

Well your temps are somewhat normal for the combination of warm room temp and stock cooling. Idle is about where it should be (~15C above room temp) and loads are normal to stock cooler. Bigger cooler will bring temps down.

Your cpu wouldn't be damaged. If you want to replace the cooler, it would be to lower noise--in which case the 212 Evo might not be the best option.
