antivirus?

Im about ready to get my freshly built pc up and going. I need a to notch antivirus.

I heard that all you really need is windows defender and malwarebytes. is that true? if not, what antivirus do you suggest i get?


my pc will ONLY be used for youtube, netflix, and gaming (may include downloads outside of steam)

people on here love the free shit if its good. I use Kaspersky because its great and does not use much of your rig. very customizable and the interface is very intuitive. it goes on sale a lot anywhere from a penny with rebates to like 18 bucks pretty often. I always download it from the website and buy a disk online or at frys and just use that cd key to activate it.

Norton or Eset is my honest opinion, I used for work for AVG as a security researcher.  Before I quit.  

 

Why Norton???

Because its got great hueristics, doesn't screw up your pc with junk.   And despite the bad reputation it actually does a good job.  The firewall is great btw. 

 

Eset, for much of the same reasons.  Its hueristics aren't as good but it litterally has no impact on your system and its signatures are held in memory.   While Norton's are in the cloud.  This means no matter what Eset can detect malware extremerly fast as its signatures are always stored in memory (about a 80MB size).  And no cpu is used by it either.  It also has a good HIPS incase you want to fiddle around with rules.  And despite its firewall being quite poor.  Its actually very customizable and can be the best all around if customized heavily.

and go to bad sites cause they don't know any better

 

so you still need something alot better then defender..defender is so bad...its basically not even a av

10 bucks at frys and free a few times a year. amazon has it on sale about every month.

Eset is the way to go.  yes free works, but paid options are better.  avg is slow as shit, avast eats system resources like it wants to be chrome or some shit.  ive tried probably a dozen different anti-viruses over the past few years, including avg, avast, eset/nod32, kaspersky, comodo, McAfee, and nortons(although its been a while).

eset is the only one that not only works extremely well, hardly uses any system resources (even when scanning), and has a really simple ui.  its worth it
