Linux or worth the money for Windows?

My friend doesn't wanna get windows because it costs another 150 ontop of his PC build, is it worth it or can he do with a decent version of a linux os?

By far that is the one thing i recommend more than anything else on this forum.

That and the 390>970 and don't buy seagate.

its just keys, not iso and disks etc

That has nothing to do with the price. They are so cheap because they are reselling MSDN keys or keys purchased in 3rd world "reduced pricing" markets where $100 would be a month's salary.

No don't do it man.

 

If you actually force yourself to use and learn linux you will figure out quickly that you aren't missing out. Take it from someone who dropped windows and went to linux.

 

Start with something with lots of support like ubuntu, My personal recommendation would be ubuntu with the gnome 3 desktop environment. It is far better then windows.

 

Don't listen to these people who have probably never even tried to learn linux.

What does your friend want to do... if gaming go windows, if not really willing to learn and encounter weird problems... windows (for the most part).  If really into computers and programming and the like... windows, with a partition for linux to try out and do basic stuff in.

Most of the games he has on steam are also available for Linux too so game compatibility isn't much a big deal.

As Linux is free, he can just try it out and if it doesn't fit his needs, he can still buy Windows.

Well then.. try linux to start... I agree with @Opask.. ubuntu of some variation would be a good starting point.  I would inform him of linux and how it functions (command driven.. with a gui for fun) and let him research it, see if it something he is interested in getting involved with and let him make the choice.  I can say that if you are not ready to learn new things and just want a OS to work, then windows is the obvious choice, there is a premium but it may be worth it to your friend depending on his mindset.

Considering Windows 7 is cheap as on G2A he'll buy that, thanks guys, he would rather stick with something he's familiar with.
