r9 390x vs gtx 980

Gut431

I personally would get the 980, though the 390X does give the 980 a good run for its money.

390X, it's cheaper and performs about the same + it will potentially perform better in DX12.

390X. It either beats the 980, equals it, or loses to it by a very small margin. All for much less. Power consumption doesn't matter. Hey you'll have $3 more by the end of the year. Oh no! It DOES get hotter, but not by much, and they won't throttle, so who cares? I've been running a freaking GTX 580(Thermi) 24/7 for months now and haven't noticed an ambient temperature increase in my room.

More like "DX12 is only months away, and who the hell drops hundreds of dollars on a card just to have it perform on par now, and get beaten out in a few months". Until there's some kind of proper response to this by Nvidia, you have to consider their 900 series suspect, especially if you're looking to buy a new card now.

But hey, what do I know? It's not like the 980 ti is potentially being matched or outperformed by a 290x in DX12, right?

Nvidia's lower performance is becuse it doesn't support "Async Compute", which is a core feature in DX12. It will become more evident in future neutral benchmarks (not Nvidia sponsored) too.

390x is a great choice since it is cheaper, matches 980's peformance and is more "DX12 ready" than Maxwell cards.

Who cares about stone age Resolutions?

And AMD just equaled to NVidia and NVidia will fix this.

1080p, 1440p and 2160p are "stone age resolutions"?!?

Nvidia will only fix this by releasing new GPU's which fanboys will insta buy or by pressuring developers to disable async compute.

The benchmark you posted is without async compute as biased sources bench it that way to make nvidia's cards shine.

1. Nope, only 1080p and below. I thought that would be clear.

2. Please dont use the Word "Fanboy", i have Problems take People serious who talk that way.

3. We dont know what will happen.

4. I will use my Card as long as it gets 60+ fps in 1440p and than i will upgrade again. I can spend 800€ a Year on a Graphicscard, so in the end idgaf. And i dont care if its Green or Red. I buy the fastest Card available and dont think about what could be in 6 Months. Tomorrow we all could be dead.

1. More than 60% of steam users are on 1080p or lower. I agree it's not the latest and greatest but still most users haven't adopted higher resolutions and 1440p and they are still a niche in the market.

2. People who buy products from the same company that rips them off every year are fanboys. NV gimped the performance of Kepler cards with gameworks in some games that even a 960 beats a prevously top tier card like the 780. The same thing will probably happen with Maxwell when Pascal hits the market as it will surely feature Async Compute and will have a big boost just from that.

3. Soon more DX12 will be available and we will know for sure whether current NV cards are bad for DX12. Keep in mind that AotS is a neutral benchmark.

4. Great for you! Most users don't upgrade their GPUs every generation and want cards that can last more than 1 year and still be relevant. As some reddit user said "Buy NV if you want a fast card now. Buy AMD if you want a longer lasting card.". And most of the educated consumers surely want a longer lasting card if they value their money.

1080p isn't "stone age", a more apt term would be "baseline" - it's the lowest level anything should be compared at, but it's still a relevant standard.. In any case, you can't dismiss the 290x matching our outperforming the 980 ti in DX12 as being due to "stone age resolutions", as 1440p (the one you use) and 2160p are both in the comparison.

As an aside, 800€ a year on video cards puts you on the extreme end of users. Most people can't/aren't willing to shell that out every year, so just because this isn't as relevant to you doesn't mean it's not relevant to the OP. You can't make suggestions on the basis that everyone will have 800€ to throw down every year, because that's not at all people - it's more like 1% of the market.
