Matte is probably better for outdoor use, since its probably anti glare, but the glass will probably offer better protection.

I've seen some  pretty decent relatively cheap tempered glass screen protectors, so those.

If you get a matte screen protector you will need to get a good high quality one. The cheap ones distort the image and make the screen look like garbage. Personally I would avoid them entirely and get a good glossy plastic or glass one.
