It is possible, in rare circumstances and some games. But at most, the 980 will beat it. (e.g 4K)

He's probably only looking at a single game benchmark. There are probably some games where the 290x and 980 perform pretty much the same

you are correct.

the  980  is better than all amd gpus up to the fury, so it beats the 290,290x,390 and 390x.

They are similar, the GTX 980 normally beats on FPS, but the R9 290x beats on price performance.

With the newer drivers, the 290X is more competitive than in the old GTX 980 reviews. I'd still consider the 980 a little better though.

Add the probable DX12 boost for AMD though, and the 290X can sometimes even compare to a GTX 980 Ti. Remains to be seen how that'll play out in real-world, completed games.

They're actually surprisingly close in a lot of games, and at 4K the 290X does wonders

so sure 3 fps isn't the truth, but he's definitely not a retard

i showed him that and he still says its wrong

gpuboss is crap and he probs knows that

He might be comparing a non OC 980 vs a aftermarket 290x,

why even argue; fanboys from both camps are irritating

Maybe in a single game benchmark, they are rather close but the 980 still comes out on top.

Depends on your point of view. A 390X is about level with a 980. A 390X is an overclocked 290X. A stock 290X is about level with a 970. An overclocked 970 is also about level with a 980.

So going by the capabilities of the Hawaii core themselves they're not wrong, you just have to do a bit of overclocking and hope your GPU isn't a potato.
