Deus Ex: Mankind Divided preorder nonsense, trailer fail

Sakkura

Square Enix has finally put a launch date (February 23, 2016) on the upcoming Deus Ex game, but we never asked for this™

A number of preorder bonus tiers have to be unlocked by people preordering. There's a 4-day "head start" on offer as the ultimate unlock if enough people preorder. The other tiers force customers to choose between mutually exclusive bonuses, including some gameplay-affecting, non-cosmetic bonuses. Not to worry, you can buy the collector's edition to get all the bonus content. That's a hefty $150 though.

While announcing the release date for the game — it's Feb. 23, 2016 by the way — Square Enix is also trying something new with its Deus Ex: Mankind Divided preorder system, introducing tiered rewards based on the number of preorders placed for the game across retailers "in select countries."

Players who preorder the game can register at augmentyourpreorder.com and, as the overall goals for the preorder campaign increase, so do the reward tiers. It's a bit like Kickstarter, but you're buying a game that will be completed and released with or without your money; instead, all you're contributing to is a bit of promotional theater.

Source 2: http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2015/08/deus_ex_mankind_divided_may_have_the_worst_pre-order_strategy_yet

Don't worry if you can't be bothered, though, as the title's Collector's Edition will come with all of the pre-order rewards, as well as some physical bonuses like the obligatory 9" statue, steelbook case, and printed 48-page art book. You can learn a little more about the 'Augment Your Pre-Order' promotion courtesy of the video clip below. Remember to give it a good ol' thumbs down on

when you're done.

Most notably, a horrifying Youtube promotional video details the system and urges you to "augment your preorder", but has received such a backlash that the main video has already been made private. A still-available version on the official Deus Ex channel has 116 upvotes to 6624 downvotes as of this post. That's more than a 50:1 ratio, and the number of downvotes amount to over a third of the video's 18954 views.

This exercise, particularly the youtube video, is so bad it borders on satire. The lesson is clearer than ever: Don't preorder games.

This is the game I look the most forward to. Getting the collectors edition for sure.

I don't see the issue here. plenty of games have used the steam feature of pre order tiers, and valve even used the earlier launch perk for portal 2. Most of the stuff can be earned in the game anyways.

Well. I'm severely disappointed by this. Deus Ex is one of my all time favourite franchises. HR was fucking awesome - a truly worthy successor to the glory that was the original Deus Ex (Especially after the not-so-good Invisible War).

I don't want to have to spend $150 fucking dollars just to play all the DLC and missions. I couldn't give a shit about all the extra "cosmetic" or bonus content - but the stuff that directly affects gameplay? Hell no.

I wasn't going to pre-order it - but I might had bought it day-one after watching reviews. Now? Nope. I'll wait until a sale where I can get all the bonus mission/DLC crap without spending $150.

For Portal? Sure. But with Deus ex? I highly doubt you'll be able to "earn in-game" the bonus DLC or Mission.

If you want everything in the Collectors Edition, then sure, it's worth it. But I don't care about the 9" Jensen figure, or all the bonus books, or soundtrack, etc. I don't want to have to pay $150 for a physical copy that has has a bunch of stuff I don't care about just to get all the bonus launch DLC/Mission stuff.

You have to pay $150 to get all of the pre-order content.

Otherwise, you have to pick and choose what things you want for each tier that is unlocked if you pay the regular price.

Not to mention, Square Enix practically admitted that they are locking levels into a pre-order bonus or a retail exclusive pre-order bonus, something that EA has got shat on for in the past.

No wonder why people are angry.

At least if you're a PC gamer, refunding through Steam is a breeze for things like this. I'm not sure console gamers are as lucky though.

I would get the collectors ed if I could afford it. I'm sure if I pay $150 I'd be paying for the things I also didn't want :/ (sort of like cable TV)

I don't understand people who spend 1/3 of their GPU on a CE edition? Why don't just get it for 10$ a few months after...

I think some of it is mostly augment skills from the get go, so they should be doable. Skins are not important.

They did the same with the last deus ex, with the tong's son mission. So mission wise It's not a new thing either. Back then you could get a cheaper version of the collector edition without the figure, but with everything else. All the ingame items were possible to get with a normal edition.

When I bought HR, I got the digital deluxe edition I think? It included Tong's mission and all the bonus DLC, including The Missing Link. I then bought the Director's Cut when it came out (Especially since they gave a huge discount for those who already owned HR).

On a side note, I loved that they integrated The Missing Link into the actual game. Feels much more seamless then it did before.

I really enjoyed Human Revolution and was looking forward to see how Mankind Divided turned out. I suppose I still am, but this is all very souring.

People are getting more and more tired of pre-ordering.

People always give EA so much shit but they at least not pull this kind of stuff this is the same kind of shit Assassins Creed Unity did last year:

How can a company be so stupid and copy Ubisoft after that disaster of last year.

Not only am I not pre-ordering, but since I never pre-order anyway, I have to escalate to not buying the game at all. Fuck you Squenix.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

Especially since now, not only do pirates get a better experience than paying customers, they even get a better experience than people who preorder. They don't have to choose between mutually exclusive "bonuses", they can get the whole thing.
