£100-150 budget, what GPU should I get next?

1B0Y

So after upgrading last year to a Gigabyte R9 270x (and having a butt-ton of bad experiences with the card and drivers offered by AMD), I've now come to the conclusion that the AMD GPU I currently have is not for me.

Don't get me wrong, I've had some impressive improvements with the games I run compared to my old GTX 650, and before I upgraded, I did enjoy being on NVIDIA and the features that was offered.

So today, I'm asking you guys what card I should buy next.

My current specs:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 (3.4GHz - OC'd to 3.8GHz)

Motherboard: Some old Gigabyte motherboard

GPU: Gigabyte R9 270x (Windforce edition - 2GB)

RAM: 8GB Corsair RAM (1600MHz)

PSU: Corsair 700W (forgot which one - Bronze certified)

I'd go for a GTX 960. It's probably not the best performance per penny but at the end of the day, it offers reliability.

I've done over 15 customer builds with the card so far and no hiccups, no returns, no dissatisfaction.

If you must go Nvidia, GTX 960 is at the top end of that price range. Although the R9 380 is better for the price.

Also, here's an idea of what kind of games I play:

  • Battlefield 3 and 4
  • Arma 2 and 3 (with mods)
  • GTA 5
  • (List most valve games here)

and so on... Also regarding the GTX 960, I was thinking the same thing as well but I wanted some feedback regarding it ;)

My pic would be the GTX 960 since you've had a rough time with AMD lately.

IMO I would get the Gigabyte G1 version of it of it, since you know you have the space to fit it, and OC it.

If you're set on spending your whole budget the 4GB one will do you very nice and play the games on your list with a little more flair. However if you want a great deal, there is one of the 2GB version on newegg right now (For the US that is, I'd link it to you otherwise) OPEN BOX (not used) for around 175 USD.

I'd go for R9 380.

Or If you can find a second hand 970 for the cheap price, get it. :D

Intel Core i3 2100 @ 3.10GHz - Intel Stock Cooler - Zotac Geforce GT 610 2GB Synergy Edition

Intel DH61WW - Corsair® Value Select 4GBx1 DDR3 1600 MHz - Antec BP-300P PSU

WD Green 1TB - Seagate 2.5" HDD 1TB - Seagate Barracuda 500GB - Antec X1 E.

Guessing you've tried running the AMD card on Win10? Also i'm in the UK (although i think Newegg now ship to the UK...)

I've done one build with an old AMD card for windows 10 and it actually worked out fine, but I have heard of the troubles other people are facing with driver support recently (which is sad, because AMD does make some good GPUs at good pricing)

Personally I'm a Nvidia person though and run 970 in my current set up, and I think for your budget the 960 will suit your needs quite well. If you want that open box deal just try searching newegg for gtx 960 and checking the filter for "open box"

Happy gaming to you.
