Building a server!

Planning on building a server for minecraft but wanting to use it for other purposes later on. Dont know what prosseser to buy as well as what mother board to go with it. If there is anything else i should know before buying, please tell me Dont really want to spend more than what i have to.

Im using a G3258 and it runs a MC server just fine. Along with an FTP, apache and firewall

Well, first question: how many slots?

Like rtpb5642 said a G3258 will cut it for anything around ~24 Players, 4GB RAM should be enough, take 8 if you want but it shouldn't be necessary. HDD/SSD is also not sooo important, MC is very heavy on I/O so you are better off having a solid backup solution than investing much money in "server grade storage".

Also use SpigotMC and not the "original" MC server build.

I ran a minecraft server on a Core I3 for like 3 years before that system died when I tried to do a case transplant and split the board in half (CPU was fine but I couldn;t be asked to buy a new board)

Better upload speed is much more important than a better CPU.

CPU wise, any modern quad-core is a good starting point, especially if you need more than 30 people and/or using plugins. 

 

More ram is necessary as you start adding plugins. 2-3GB vanilla can do 40-50 people, though. 

 

And +1 for Spigot.

Be sure to get a board that supports more than 16GB ram (4 slots). If necessary, you can just add more ram/bump up to an i5 in the future.

Depends on what you need, do you need 4 cores or 2 stronger ones?

The Intell will run cooler and have stronger cores. I would reccomend an i3 with hyperthreading before going AMD. (speaking from experience)
